Before using Ranexa (ranolazine), tell your doctor or pharmacist your medical history, especially of: family history of heart rhythm problems (e.g., congenital long QT syndrome, QT prolongation), heart problems (e.g., heart failure, coronary artery disease), kidney problems.

Before having surgery, tell your doctor or dentist that you are using Ranexa (ranolazine).

Caution is advised when using Ranexa (ranolazine) in the elderly because they may be more sensitive to its effects, especially dizziness and constipation.

Ranexa (ranolazine) should be used only when clearly needed during pregnancy.  Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor.

Ranexa (ranolazine) is used with other medications to treat a certain type of chest pain (chronic stable angina) in patients whose angina has not been controlled by other treatments.  It decreases the number of times you may get chest pain.  Relieving symptoms of angina can increase your ability to exercise and perform strenuous work.

Ranexa (ranolazine) works differently than other drugs for angina, so it can be used with your other angina medications (e.g., amlodipine, beta blockers, nitrates).  It is thought to work by improving how well the heart uses oxygen so that it can do more work with less oxygen.

Take Ranexa (ranolazine) by mouth, usually twice daily with or without food or as directed by your doctor.  Swallow the tablet whole.  Do not crush or chew the tablets.  Doing so will destroy the slow release of the drug, which may decrease its effectiveness and increase your risk of side effects.

Avoid eating grapefruit or drinking grapefruit juice while being treated with Ranexa (ranolazine).  Grapefruit can increase the amount of certain medications in your bloodstream.  Consult your doctor or pharmacist for more details.

The dosage is based on your medical condition and response to therapy.  Do not take more than 1000 milligrams in a single dose or more than 2000 milligrams in 24 hours.

Use Ranexa (ranolazine) regularly in order to get the most benefit from it.  To help you remember, take it at the same times each day.  Ranexa (ranolazine) must be taken regularly to be effective.  It should not be used to treat angina when it occurs.  Use other medications (e.g., sublingual nitroglycerin) to relieve an angina attack as directed by your doctor.  Consult your doctor or pharmacist for details.

Do not suddenly stop taking Ranexa (ranolazine) without consulting your doctor.  Your condition may become worse when the drug is suddenly stopped.  Your dose may need to be gradually decreased.

Inform your doctor if your condition does not improve or if it worsens (e.g., your chest pain happens more often).

Dizziness, headache, lightheadedness, nausea, tiredness, and constipation may occur.  If any of these effects persist or worsen, notify your doctor or pharmacist promptly.

Remember that your doctor has prescribed Ranexa (ranolazine) because he or she has judged that the benefit to you is greater than the risk of side effects.  Many people using Ranexa (ranolazine) do not have serious side effects.

Tell your doctor immediately if any of these unlikely but serious side effects occur: sudden dizziness/fainting, slow/fast/irregular/pounding heartbeat, numbness, shaking (tremor), swelling of the ankles/feet, unexpected weight gain, vision changes.

A very serious allergic reaction to Ranexa (ranolazine) is unlikely, but seek immediate medical attention if it occurs.  Symptoms of a serious allergic reaction may include: rash, itching, swelling, severe dizziness, trouble breathing.

This is not a complete list of possible side effects.  If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist.

If you miss a dose of Ranexa (ranolazine), take it as soon as you remember.  If it is near the time of the next dose, skip the missed dose and resume your usual dosing schedule.  Do not double the dose to catch up.

Your healthcare professionals (e.g., doctor or pharmacist) may already be aware of any possible drug interactions and may be monitoring you for it.  Do not start, stop or change the dosage of any medicine before checking with them first.

Ranexa (ranolazine) should not be used with the following medications because very serious interactions may occur: drugs affecting liver enzymes that remove Ranexa (ranolazine) from your body (azole antifungals such as itraconazole/ketoconazole, macrolide antibiotics such as erythromycin, protease inhibitors such as ritonavir, diltiazem, verapamil), drugs which may affect the heart rhythm (QTc prolonging drugs such as dofetilide, quinidine, sotalol, thioridazine, ziprasidone).

If you are currently using any of these medications listed above, tell your doctor or pharmacist before starting Ranexa (ranolazine).

Other drugs besides Ranexa (ranolazine) and those listed above which may affect the heart rhythm (QTc prolongation in the EKG) include amiodarone, pimozide, procainamide, and sparfloxacin, among others.  QTc prolongation can infrequently result in serious, rarely fatal irregular heartbeats.  Consult your doctor or pharmacist for more details, and for instructions on how you may minimize the risk of this effect.

Before using Ranexa (ranolazine), tell your doctor or pharmacist of all prescription and nonprescription/herbal products you may use, especially of: cyclosporine, drugs removed from your body by certain liver enzymes (e.g., digoxin, simvastatin, TCA antidepressants such as amitriptyline/imipramine, trazodone, certain antipsychotics such as clozapine/haloperidol/risperidone), drugs that may decrease potassium levels (e.g., "water pills"/diuretics such as furosemide/hydrochlorothiazide).

This document does not contain all possible interactions.  Therefore, before using this product, tell your doctor or pharmacist of all the products you use.  Keep a list of all your medications with you, and share the list with your doctor and pharmacist.

"Three years ago, my doctor started me on Combivent for chronic bronchitis and suggested I contact Universal Drugstore.  I ordered at that time and I am still receiving my medication from Universal Drugstore.  I can't say enough about the extra fine service I have had with UDS.  I have recommended UDS to several people."
