What is a generic medication?

Generic medications are significantly discounted copies of brand name medication that have the same active ingredients, intended use, dosage, side effects, effects, and route of administration as the original brand name medication. In other words, generic medications have the same pharmacological effects as their brand-name counterparts. Over half of all prescribed medications are for generic medications.

How Trileptal Works

Trileptal is an anticonvulsant drug, prescribed alone or in combination with other medicines, to patients suffering from epilepsy. It is thought to work by decreasing brain nerve impulses that cause seizures. Trileptal is available in tablets of 150mg, 300mg, or 600mg or in an oral suspension.

Possible Side Effects

People taking Trileptal need to be aware that the medication may lead to an electrolyte imbalance as it reduces the amount of sodium in the body. This can be life-threatening and patients need to be monitored for symptoms such as headaches, memory problems, confusion, hallucination or shallow breathing. Trileptal can also cause serious dermatologic reactions such as Stevens-Johnson syndrome and toxic epidermal necrolysis.

Other unwanted side effects may include anxiety and depression. Some people may experience panic attacks or even suicidal thoughts. Patients also need to monitor for easy bruising or unusual bleeding, numbness, muscle weakness, urinating less than usual, jaundice, or skin reactions such as swelling in the face and skin rash.

Contraindications

Trileptal makes some people feel drowsy. If taken with alcohol, this effect is increased. It is important to avoid alcohol when taking this medication. A number of other medications and supplements may also interact with Trileptal in undesirable or dangerous ways. Additionally, patients taking this medication should stay properly hydrated at all times.

Special care must be taken during hot weather or when exercising to avoid overheating or dehydration. Drinking too much water can also be dangerous as it affects levels of electrolytes in the body.

A number of other medications interact with Trileptal. Below is a list of some medications to avoid taking simultaneously. The list is not exhaustive. It is important that patients discuss all current medications and supplements with their doctor.

  • Amiodarone
  • Amitriptyline
  • Calcium channel blockers
  • Diltiazem
  • Felodipine
  • Chlorpromazine
  • Isradipine
  • Valproic acid
  • Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors

The information above is a quick summary of facts about Trileptal, provided by third parties. Patients should always refer to a physician for medical advice on how to administer this drug and any other specific questions they may have.

Generic Alternatives to Trileptal

The active ingredient in Trileptal is called oxcarbazepine. Available through our international online pharmacy are generic alternatives to Trileptal, which all contain oxcarbazepine as an active ingredient.

Patients considering switching to generic oxcarbazepine should first have a discussion with their doctor to determine if their dose should be adjusted after the switch. Regardless of whether a patient takes Trileptal or a generic alternative, it is important to always take the medication as prescribed and not to miss doses. It is dangerous to suddenly stop taking the medication, even if a patient feels better. For those who no longer need to take the medication, doses should be decreased gradually and in accordance with the treating physician’s directions.

Women taking hormonal contraceptives should consider switching to other forms of birth control while taking Trileptal or its generic alternatives. The active ingredient, oxcarbazepine, makes hormonal contraceptives less effective.

Impact on Neurons After Seizures May Further Drive Epilepsy

A protein called albumin (present in blood plasma) enters the brain and kills nerve cells after epileptic seizures, possibly contributing to speeding up development of the disease.

In healthy people, albumin is prevented from entering the brain by the layers of specialized cells which line the blood vessels leading to the brain. This study suggests that epilepsy might be prevented or alleviated by minimizing the amount of albumin entering the brain.
