Take Valtrex (valacyclovir) 1000mg by mouth, with or without food or as directed by your doctor. Drink plenty of fluids while taking Valtrex (valacyclovir) 1000mg. When taking Valtrex (valacyclovir) 1000mg to treat an outbreak, it works best if you take Valtrex (valacyclovir) 1000mg when you first notice an outbreak is starting. The medication may not work as well if you wait more than 72 hours to start it. Dosage of Valtrex (valacyclovir) 1000mg is based on your medical condition and response to therapy.
When treating an outbreak, continue to take Valtrex (valacyclovir) 1000mg until the full-prescribed amount is finished even if symptoms disappear. When using Valtrex (valacyclovir) 1000mg to suppress/control outbreaks, take exactly as directed by your doctor. Do not skip doses or stop taking this without your doctor's approval. Stopping therapy too soon may result in ineffective treatment.
If using Valtrex (valacyclovir) 1000mg to treat an outbreak, inform your doctor if your condition persists or worsens.

Nausea, vomiting, fatigue, headache, dizziness, stomach pain, painful periods may occur. If any of these effects persist or worsen, notify your doctor or pharmacist promptly.
Remember that your doctor has prescribed Valtrex (valacyclovir) 1000mg because he or she has judged that the benefit to you is greater than the risk of side effects. Many people using Valtrex (valacyclovir) 1000mg do not have serious side effects.
Tell your doctor immediately if any of these unlikely but serious side effects occur: mental/mood changes (e.g., agitation, hallucinations), confusion, speech problems, shaky/unsteady movement, vision changes.
Tell your doctor immediately if any of these rare but very serious side effects occur: seizures, loss of consciousness, signs of other infections (e.g., fever, persistent sore throat).
Valtrex (valacyclovir) 1000mg may rarely cause a blood disorder (thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura) or a severe kidney problem (hemolytic uremic syndrome). These problems are more likely to occur if you have HIV disease or if you have had a bone marrow transplant or an organ transplant. Tell your doctor immediately if any of these rare but very serious side effects occur: change in the amount of urine, easy bruising/bleeding, unusual fever.
A very serious allergic reaction to Valtrex (valacyclovir) 1000mg is unlikely, but seek immediate medical attention if it occurs. Symptoms of a serious allergic reaction may include: rash, itching, swelling, severe dizziness, trouble breathing.

If you miss a dose of Valtrex (valacyclovir) 1000mg, take it as soon as you remember. If it is near the time of the next dose, skip the missed dose and resume your usual dosing schedule. Do not double the dose to catch up.
