Can diet help improve asthma symptoms? This is the question a recently-published study probed. According to it, the answer is yes. The researchers found that a diet that’s rich in vegetables, whole grains, and fruits helps improve asthma outcomes.

A diet with more emphasis on whole grains, fruits, and vegetables has been said to provide many health benefits. Several studies have shown that such a diet can provide benefits such as reduced cancer risk, improved cardiometabolic health, and better cognition. This kind of diet is also recommended for people who want to lose weight.

But can such a diet also prove helpful to people who have asthma? Not much research has been done previously to probe this question.

Precisely for this reason, the present team took upon themselves to look into this matter. They analyzed data of more than 3,400 adults. All the participants provided information regarding their respiratory health by answering relevant questions. They also gave information regarding their diet.

The researchers described a healthful diet as one that was rich in whole grains, vegetables, and fruits. On the other hand, a diet rich in meat, sugar, and salt was adjudged as unhealthful.

The chances of having asthma symptoms were reduced by 30 percent among men who adhered to a healthful diet and by 20 percent among women who ate healthy.

Moreover among such men chances of having asthma that was poorly controlled reduced by 60 percent among men. For women who followed a healthful diet the reduction was of 27 percent.
