Hypertension - Atacand Plus Drug Information - Universal Drugstore Pharmacy News

Atacand Plus is a medication used to treat patients with hypertension (high blood pressure). This drug helps to lower the blood pressure and thereby reduce the risk of stroke, heart attack, and kidney problems.

Atacand Plus has two active ingredients (candesartan and hydrochlorothiazide) and is typically prescribed when patients do not experience relief by using only one of the two substances.

Atacand Plus Helps Treat the Following Conditions:

Hypertension, or high blood pressure, is the force with which blood pushes against the artery walls. Blood pressure is determined by systolic (pressure in arteries when the heart beats) and diastolic blood pressure (the pressure between beats).

In patients with hypertension, the systolic pressure is higher than 130 mmHg and the diastolic pressure is above 80 mmHg.

While hypertension may not show any signs or symptoms, if left untreated, it increases the risk of experiencing serious life-threatening health problems like heart attack and stroke.

Depending on the patient’s condition, hypertension can be managed with diet, physical activity, and/or medication.

Active Ingredients and Generic Alternatives to Atacand Plus

The two active ingredients found in Atacand Plus are candesartan and hydrochlorothiazide.

Candesartan is an angiotensin receptor blocker that allows easier blood flow by relaxing blood vessels. Hydrochlorothiazide is a diuretic that increases urine production.

A generic alternative to Atacand Plus is available under the name candesartan cilexetil/hydrochlorothiazide.

What Is Atacand Plus?

Atacand Plus is a combination medicine that helps to improve blood flow and reduce blood pressure.

Atacand Plus is typically prescribed as a once-daily oral dose. As the medication contains a diuretic which increases urination, it is best to avoid taking it before bedtime. Read the medication guide carefully and take as directed by your treating physician.

If you are also taking cholesterol medications (e.g. colestipol, cholestyramine), take them at least least four hours before – or four hours after – your dose of Atacand Plus.

Hypertension may not show obvious signs and symptoms, so do not change your dose. Continue taking Atacand Plus, even if you feel well. It can take up to four weeks before you experience the benefits of this medication.

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it’s almost time for your next dose, however, skip the missed dose and proceed as usual. Do not take double doses.

Possible Drug Interactions

Some medications can affect the way Atacand Plus and its generic alternatives work. This increases your risk of developing side effects. With your doctor, discuss all medications and supplements you take (particularly NSAIDs, cough-and-cold products, and diet pills).

Negative interactions between Atacand Plus and the blood pressure drug Valturna can occur. Other medications that may negatively interact include dofetilide, lithium, and drugs which increase potassium levels (like benazepril and lisinopril).

Some birth control pills which contain drospirenone can also affect treatment with Atacand Plus.

Precautions and Adverse Effects

Pregnant patients are not advised to use this medication. If you are breastfeeding, consult your treating physician as Atacand Plus passes into breast milk.

Before you begin treatment, discuss your medical history with your physician, especially anything relating to dehydration, low or high potassium levels in the blood, and liver disease. Discuss possible allergic reactions to the medication.

Notify your treating doctor if you suffer from kidney disease, lupus, or gout.

Atacand Plus may affect blood sugar levels of patients suffering from diabetes. Monitoring blood sugar and reporting results to the doctor is vital. Alert your physician if you have diabetes and experience increased urination and/or thirst while taking Atacand Plus.

Older patients are more prone to experiencing dizziness, kidney problems, and increased levels of potassium.

Some patients may feel lightheaded and dizzy, especially at the start of Atacand Plus treatment. If these symptoms worsen, contact your doctor. Other common symptoms include extreme thirst, dry mouth, muscle cramps and weakness, and confusion.

In rare cases, patients may experience serious side effects such as a decrease in vision, eye pain, fainting, kidney problems, and joint pain. Monitor for symptoms of high potassium levels like irregular heartbeat and muscle weakness.

Storage and Handling

Keep Atacand Plus at room temperature, away from moisture and heat. Store away from children and pets.

Unwanted or expired medicine should be disposed of safely. Never flush down the toilet or pour down drains. Consult your pharmacist or local waste disposal company to learn more about proper disposal methods.
