Moventig Drug Information - Universal Drugstore Pharmacy News

Moventig is prescribed to adults suffering from opioid-induced constipation (OIC) with chronic non-cancer pain. The medication stops opioids from binding to certain receptors in the bowels. Moventig provides relief from the OIC symptoms without impacting their pain control action.

Moventig Helps Treat the Following Conditions:

Opioid-Induced Constipation (OIC)

Opioid-induced constipation (OIC) is a side effect resulting from the long-term use of opioid drugs such as morphine, tramadol, and codeine. Unlike other types of constipation, OIC is caused by substances in pain medications and not by physical factors in the body.

The most common symptoms related to OIC include heartburn, nausea, vomiting, stomach cramping, hard stools, inability to pass stools completely, and bloating. Though symptoms often disappear once the opioids are stopped, patients with chronic pain may require further treatment.

Marketed In the US as Movantik

In the US and some other parts of the world, you can buy Moventig under the brand name Movantik.

Active Ingredients

Moventig contains the active substance naloxegol oxalate. Naloxegol oxalate is an opioid receptor antagonist used to treat constipation caused by pain medications that do not respond to treatment with laxatives.

What Is Moventig?

Moventig is indicated for the treatment of constipation caused by painkillers in adult patients who have had an inadequate response to laxatives.

The medication is available in 12.5 mg and 25 mg doses. The initial recommended dosage is 25 mg, however, if the patient does not tolerate the medicine (or develops adverse side effects), the dosage may be reduced. Always take your medication exactly as prescribed by your treating physician.

Most patients are directed to take a dose of Moventig once a day, either one hour before their first meal or two hours after. Tablets should be swallowed whole. Alternatively, you can crush the tablet, mix it with 4 ounces of water, and swallow the mixture right away. To ensure you have taken the full dose, add 4 more ounces of water to the glass and drink. If necessary, Moventig can also be administered through a nasogastric tube.

It is advised that patients stop taking other laxatives before their initial treatment with Moventig.

While taking Moventig, patients should avoid consuming grapefruit and grapefruit juice.

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you can. If this happens less than 12 hours before the next dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular schedule. Never take two doses at the same time. Contact your physician or pharmacist if you have further questions.

Possible Drug Interactions

Moventig Possible Drug Interactions - Universal Drugstore Pharmacy News

Drug interactions may change the way Moventig works and/or increase the risk of side effects. Before you begin treatment with Moventig, discuss the full list of supplements, herbal products, and medications that you are taking with your physician.

Some antifungal drugs (like ketoconazole and itraconazole) can interact negatively with Moventig.

Do not stop, start, or change any of your medications without consulting your doctor.

Precautions and Adverse Effects

Moventig should not be used in patients under 18.

If used during pregnancy, Moventig may accelerate opioid withdrawal in an unborn baby, due to the underdeveloped blood-brain barrier. Breastfeeding is not recommended while taking this medication.

Common side effects include nausea, headache, vomiting, gas, diarrhea, and stomach pain.

Serious side effects can manifest in analgesia, opioid withdrawal (e.g. sweating, chills, anxiety, irritability), severe diarrhea, stomach pain, and stomach or intestinal wall perforations. Seek immediate medical help if you have persistent, worsening stomach pain.

Patients who have disruptions to the blood-brain barrier face an increased risk of experiencing analgesia and opioid withdrawal.

Storage and Handling

Store Moventig at room temperature away from heat, light, and moisture. Keep all medications out of the reach of children and pets.

Expired drugs and unused medications should be disposed of safely. For more information on proper drug disposal methods, contact your pharmacist or your local waste disposal company.
