  • Triumeq Overview

abacavir, dolutegravir, and lamivudine. Triumeq is used to help control HIV infection. It helps to decrease the amount of HIV in your body so your immune system can work better. This lowers your chance of getting HIV complications (such as new infections, cancer) and improves your quality of life. Abacavir and lamivudine belong to a class of drugs known as nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NRTIs). Dolutegravir belongs to a class of drugs known as integrase inhibitors. Triumeq is not a cure for HIV infection. To decrease your risk of spreading HIV disease to others, continue to take all HIV medications exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Use an effective barrier method (latex or polyurethane condoms/dental dams) during sexual activity as directed by your doctor. Do not share personal items (such as needles/syringes, toothbrushes, and razors) that may have contacted blood or other body fluids. Consult your doctor or pharmacist for more details.

  • Triumeq Warnings

In some people, the abacavir in Triumeq has caused a serious (sometimes fatal) allergic reaction. Your doctor should order a blood test to measure your risk before you start Triumeq or take it again. If the blood test shows you are at greater risk, you should not take Triumeq and your doctor should discuss other treatment choices with you.rash, itching/swelling (especially of the face/tongue/throat), severe dizziness, trouble breathing, fever, extreme tiredness, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, stomach pain, muscle aches/pain, joint pain, sore throat, mouth sores, blisters, eye redness/swelling, or cough. Get medical help right away if you experience any of these symptoms. If you have stopped taking abacavir because of an allergic reaction, you must never take any form of abacavir again, or death could result. Tell all of your doctors and pharmacists if you have stopped taking abacavir due to an allergic reaction. Also, properly throw away any unused medications containing abacavir. Read the warning card provided with Triumeq for more details. You should be tested for hepatitis B infection before starting Triumeq. If you have hepatitis B infection and HIV, you may need additional drugs to treat the hepatitis B infection. You may also have a serious worsening of hepatitis symptoms if you stop taking lamivudine. Talk with your doctor before stopping Triumeq. Your doctor will monitor liver tests for several months after you stop lamivudine. Get medical help right away if you develop symptoms of worsening liver problems.

  • How to Use Triumeq

Read the Medication Guide and Warning Card provided by your pharmacist before you start taking Triumeq and each time you get a refill. Carry the Warning Card with you at all times. If you have any questions, ask your doctor or pharmacist. Do not change dosage forms of Triumeq without checking with your doctor or pharmacist. Take Triumeq by mouth with or without food as directed by your doctor, usually once daily. Do not chew, cut, or crush the tablets. If you are taking certain other medications, your doctor may direct you to take additional dolutegravir. Carefully follow your doctor's directions. Take Triumeq at least 2 hours before or 6 hours after taking sucralfate and products containing aluminum or magnesium (such as antacids, laxatives, buffered medications). These products bind with dolutegravir, decreasing its effectiveness. If you are also taking calcium or iron supplements (including vitamins/minerals that contain calcium or iron), take Triumeq at least 2 hours before or 6 hours after these products. Or if you take Triumeq with food, you can take the supplements at the same time. If you stop taking any medication containing abacavir even for a short time and then restart the drug, you have an increased chance of developing a very serious (possibly fatal) allergic reaction. Refill your medication before you run out. Do not stop treatment unless directed by your doctor. Before restarting any medication containing abacavir, consult your doctor or pharmacist, and be sure you have easy access to medical care. It is very important to keep taking Triumeq (and other HIV medications) exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Do not skip any doses. For the best effect, take Triumeq at evenly spaced times. To help you remember, take Triumeq at the same time every day. Do not take more or less of Triumeq than prescribed or stop taking it (or other HIV medicines) even for a short time unless directed to do so by your doctor. Doing so may cause the amount of virus to increase, make the infection more difficult to treat (resistant), or worsen side effects.

  • Triumeq Precautions

Before taking Triumeq, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to abacavir, dolutegravir, or lamivudine; or if you have any other allergies. Triumeq may contain inactive ingredients, which can cause allergic reactions or other problems. Talk to your pharmacist for more details. Before using Triumeq, tell your doctor or pharmacist your medical history, kidney problems, liver problems (such as hepatitis B or C, cirrhosis), disease of the pancreas (pancreatitis), alcohol use. Abacavir may increase your risk of a heart attack. Discuss the risks and benefits of treatment with your doctor and ways to lower your risk of heart disease. Tell your doctor if you have heart problems, if you smoke, or if you have other conditions that increase your risk of heart disease, such as high blood pressure, diabetes, or high cholesterol levels. Before having surgery, tell your doctor or dentist about all the products you use (including prescription drugs, nonprescription drugs, and herbal products). Before using Triumeq, women of childbearing age should talk with their doctor(s) about the risks and benefits. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or if you plan to become pregnant. Your doctor should direct you to get a pregnancy test before starting Triumeq. During pregnancy, Triumeq should be used only when clearly needed. It is not recommended for use during the first trimester of pregnancy due to possible harm to the unborn baby. Ask about reliable forms of birth control while using Triumeq. Abacavir, dolutegravir, and lamivudine pass into breast milk. Because breast milk can transmit HIV, do not breast-feed.

  • Triumeq Side Effects

    What are Triumeq side effects?

Side effects are physical, mental or emotional symptoms which occur in addition to or outside of the desired effect of a therapeutic treatment such as an over-the-counter or prescribed drug or medication. Side effects from Triumeq may occur at the beginning or at the end of treatment and may also depend on the length of time an individual remains on the treatment. Side effects, also known as adverse effects, are generally more likely to occur when starting treatment. Individuals may also experience side effects from Triumeq as a result of an interaction with other medications.

    Side Effects of Triumeq

The side effects of Triumeq may vary in number and intensity for many different reasons. Factors such as age, weight, gender and ethnicity may influence the side effects of Triumeq. Also, an individual’s state of general physical health and seriousness of the disease or illness as well as an increase or decrease in dosage may lead to side effects. Further, side effects from Triumeq may also occur as a result of an interaction with certain herbal supplements, foods or drinks.

Prescription drug side effects can be serious and may cause patients to stop the treatment. However, when side effects from the use of a prescription drug, such as Triumeq, do occur a patient should consult their physician. A physician may prescribe an additional treatment in order to control the symptoms or an adjustment in the dosage may be made. In addition, changes to diet, exercise or other lifestyle activities may help to lessen the side effects of Triumeq.

By understanding side effects and the factors which may influence the occurrence of side effects patients are empowered to take an active role in their care.
