How long does it take wellbutrin to work?
Wellbutrin (bupropion hydrochloride) is available as immediate‑release, sustained‑release (SR), and extended‑release (XL) formulations. It is FDA‑approved for major depressive disorder (MDD) and seasonal affective disorder (SAD), and for smoking cessation (Zyban SR). Off‑label uses include bipolar depression, ADHD, and SSRI‑induced sexual dysfunction.
Mechanism of Action
Wellbutrin is a norepinephrine‑dopamine reuptake inhibitor (NDRI). By blocking reuptake of these neurotransmitters, it raises their levels in the brain, improving mood, motivation, and focus.
Onset of Effect
- Initial improvement (energy, physical symptoms) may be noticed in 1–2 weeks
- Maximum benefit (mood, concentration, sleep, appetite) typically seen by 6–8 weeks
- For smoking cessation, evaluate effectiveness after 7–12 weeks of sustained‑release bupropion
Discontinuation
Do not stop Wellbutrin abruptly. Tapering under medical supervision reduces the risk of withdrawal symptoms or symptom relapse.
