Is breyna a steroid?

How to use your Breyna inhaler

Breyna (budesonide/formoterol) is a metered‑dose inhaler combining an inhaled corticosteroid (budesonide) and a long‑acting beta‑agonist (formoterol). It treats asthma in adults and children ≥ 6 years and COPD in adults. Breyna is not a rescue inhaler and will not relieve sudden breathing problems.

Breyna is the generic form of Symbicort. It comes in two strengths (80 mcg/4.5 mcg and 160 mcg/4.5 mcg) with 120 actuations per canister.

Prime your inhaler

  • Shake for 5 seconds, remove the mouthpiece cover, and spray away from you once.
  • Repeat once more. Inhaler is now primed.

Using your Breyna inhaler

  1. Shake for 5 seconds and remove the mouthpiece cover.
  2. Check for debris and ensure the dose counter is not zero. Attach a spacer if used.
  3. Exhale fully, place the mouthpiece in your mouth, and seal lips around it.
  4. Inhale deeply and slowly while pressing down on the canister.
  5. Hold your breath for about 10 seconds, then remove the inhaler.
  6. If a second dose is prescribed, shake and repeat steps 2–5.
  7. Replace the mouthpiece cover and rinse your mouth with water (do not swallow).

Store at room temperature away from heat. Do not puncture or expose to flame. Keep the mouthpiece down.

Cleaning your Breyna inhaler

  • Every 7 days, remove the cover and wipe the inside and outside of the mouthpiece with a clean, dry cloth.
  • Replace the cover. Do not immerse in water or disassemble.

When to dispose

Discard when the dose counter reaches zero or 3 months after opening the foil pouch, whichever comes first.
