What Does Vaniqa Cream Do?

Vaniqa (eflornithine hydrochloride) is a prescription topical cream for women aged 12 and older to slow unwanted facial hair growth (hirsutism) in areas such as the upper lip, cheeks, chin, and neck. It does not remove hair but delays regrowth, so you’ll still need shaving, plucking, waxing, or other methods alongside.

How Vaniqa Works

The active ingredient, eflornithine hydrochloride, inhibits the enzyme ornithine decarboxylase (ODC) in hair follicles. ODC is essential for hair growth, so blocking it reduces the rate at which new hairs develop.

How to Use Vaniqa

  • Apply twice daily, ≥ 8 hours apart, on clean, dry facial skin.
  • Perform any hair removal (shaving, plucking, waxing) ≥ 5 minutes before application.
  • Rub a thin layer into affected areas until no cream remains visible.
  • Avoid washing treated areas for at least 4 hours after application.
  • Store at room temperature, away from heat, moisture, and direct light. Keep out of reach of children.

Onset and Duration of Effect

Most users notice reduced hair growth within 4–8 weeks; maximum benefits may require up to 4 months. After stopping, hair returns to baseline in about 8 weeks.

Possible Side Effects

  • Common: stinging or burning sensation, acne, rash, itching, dry or tingling skin, headache
  • Less common: razor bumps, skin redness or irritation
  • Rare: allergic reactions (hives, swelling, difficulty breathing)

If irritation persists or you experience signs of allergy, discontinue use and consult your healthcare provider.

Precautions

  • Not studied in men; approval is for women only
  • No known systemic drug interactions due to minimal absorption
  • Safety in pregnancy and breastfeeding is not established — discuss with your doctor
  • Do not use if allergic to eflornithine or any inactive ingredients
