Important information about Afluria
The active ingredient in Afluria is an inactivated influenza virus vaccine. The vaccine contains purified influenza virus virions that have been killed so they cannot cause infection. Afluria is formulated as a trivalent influenza vaccine in some regions, meaning it contains three influenza virus strains, including influenza A subtypes and one B virus strain. Afluria Quadrivalent, also called Afluria Quad, contains four strains, including two influenza A types and two influenza B virus strains.
After receiving the flu vaccine, the immune system recognizes these virus components and produces antibodies. These antibodies help protect the body if exposed to the influenza virus during the influenza season.
Follow all directions given to you by your doctor and read all documents provided, including the full Prescribing Information, FDA-Approved Product Labeling, Instructions for Use, and Medication Guide before using Afluria. However, the following is a synopsis of the general guidelines for the use of Afluria:
- Afluria is given as an intramuscular injection by a healthcare professional.
- The injection site is usually the upper arm in adults and older children or the thigh in younger children.
- Afluria Tetra is approved for use in children 6 months of age and older, up to 64 years of age. At 65 years old, a high-dose flu vaccine is recommended instead. In Canada, Afluria Tetra is approved for use in children 5 years of age and older.
- The dose is based on age group and formulation. It is typically a 0.5 mL dose.
- Afluria may be administered using a traditional needle or an approved needle-free injection system such as PharmaJet.
Some mild or common side effects of Afluria include:
- Injection site pain, redness, or swelling.
- Headache.
- Muscle pain or myalgia.
- Fatigue or malaise.
- Mild fever.
- Loss of appetite, especially in children.
Other adverse reactions include vomiting, chills, and nausea.
Some individuals may experience serious adverse events while using Afluria. These side effects may require immediate medical attention. If you experience any of the following, contact your healthcare provider or seek emergency medical help:
- Signs of a severe allergic reaction or anaphylaxis, such as difficulty breathing, facial swelling, or hives.
- High fever that does not improve.
- Symptoms of Guillain-Barré syndrome, such as weakness or tingling sensations.
These are not all of the possible side effects of Afluria. You should always seek medical advice from your healthcare provider for any questions or concerns about your medical condition or treatment. Read the package insert, patient information, medication guides, or drug information sheets that come with this medication. You can also report adverse effects to the Food and Drug Administration at www.fda.gov/medwatch or 1-800-FDA-1088.
Before starting Afluria, it is crucial to discuss any existing health conditions with your healthcare provider. You should be sure that your healthcare provider is aware of all your medical conditions, including:
- A history of severe allergic reaction to any vaccine.
- A history of severe allergic reaction to egg protein, neomycin, or polymyxin B sulfate.
- A weakened immune system or if you are immunocompromised.
- A history of Guillain-Barré syndrome.
- A bleeding disorder or the use of blood-thinning medication.
Severe allergic reaction to a previous influenza virus vaccine or any ingredient in the formulation of Afluria.
It usually takes about two weeks after vaccination for the body to produce protective antibodies.
When Afluria is taken with other prescription drugs, over-the-counter medications, vitamins, and supplements, it may change how they work or increase the frequency or severity of side effects. Make sure that you tell your healthcare professional about anything that you are taking to avoid any negative drug interactions, including:
- Immunosuppressive medications may reduce the immune response to the vaccine.
Afluria is available as 0.5 mL single-dose pre-filled syringes (preservative-free) and 5 mL multi-dose vials. Afluria is not adjuvanted.
Afluria should be stored in a refrigerator between 2°C and 8°C. Do not freeze. Keep it in its original packaging and protected from light.
Afluria is manufactured by Seqirus USA Inc.
There is no generic version of Afluria.
Afluria is given as a single dose. There is no need to stop treatment. Annual vaccination is recommended.
