It is available as both a SureClick autoinjector and a prefilled syringe for migraine patients. Every month, you inject each dose under the skin on your thigh or stomach. Important information about Aimovig
The active ingredient in Aimovig is erenumab-aooe, which is a monoclonal antibody. It belongs to the drug class called calcitonin gene-related peptide or CGRP receptor antagonists. Its mechanism of action involves inhibiting CGRP, a molecule in the brain that causes migraine pain and symptoms. Blocking this protein helps prevent episodic migraines as well as chronic migraines.
Follow all directions given to you by your doctor and read all documents provided, including the full Prescribing Information, FDA-Approved Product Labeling, Instructions for Use, and Medication Guide, before using Aimovig. However, the following is a synopsis of the general guidelines for the use of Aimovig:
- Use the Aimovig SureClick autoinjector or prefilled syringe exactly as prescribed by your healthcare practitioner. Follow the recommendations on your prescription label and read any drug guidelines or instruction sheets.
- Aimovig is available in two device types: a single-dose (1-time) prefilled autoinjector and a single-dose (1-time) prefilled syringe. Your healthcare practitioner will recommend the type and dosage that is appropriate for you. It is injected under the skin (subcutaneously) once every month. Do not inject it yourself until a healthcare provider has demonstrated how to do so.
- Remove the injection from the refrigerator and let it warm up to room temperature for 30 minutes before injecting it. Avoid direct sunlight. Do not heat the medicine in hot water or the microwave. Do not use it if the drug has changed color or contains particles. Inject it subcutaneously (under the skin) into the abdomen (but not within 2 inches of the belly button), thighs, or upper arms. Each single-use prefilled syringe or autoinjector can only be used once. Throw it away after one usage, even if the medicine is still inside. Shaking the syringe or autoinjector can damage the medication.
The most common side effects of Aimovig seen in clinical trials as compared to placebo include:
- Pain, redness, or swelling at the injection site.
- Severe constipation.
- Skin rash.
- Hair loss.
- Muscle spasms or cramps.
- Bloating.
Some individuals may experience serious side effects while using Aimovig. These side effects may require immediate medical attention. If you experience any of the following, contact your healthcare provider or seek emergency medical help:
- Severe allergic reactions such as hives, skin rash, swelling of the face and tongue, and trouble breathing.
- New or worsening hypertension (high blood pressure).
- New or worsening Raynaud’s phenomenon.
These are not all of the possible adverse reactions of Aimovig. You should always seek medical advice from your healthcare provider for any questions or concerns about your medical condition or treatment. Read all patient information, medication guides, or drug information sheets that come with this medication. You can also report adverse effects to the Food and Drug Administration at www.fda.gov/medwatch or 1-800-FDA-1088.
Before starting Aimovig, it is crucial to discuss any existing health conditions with your healthcare provider. You should be sure that your healthcare provider is aware of all your medical conditions, including whether you:
- Are pregnant or plan to become pregnant.
- Are breastfeeding.
- Have an allergy to erenumab.
- Have Raynaud’s phenomenon.
- Have high blood pressure (hypertension).
Hypersensitivity reactions to the medication.
According to clinical studies, some patients experienced fewer migraines after taking Aimovig (erenumab) for one month. However, even if you don't see any significant changes right away, continue taking the drug. It can take several months to reap the full advantages.
When Aimovig is taken with other prescription drugs, over-the-counter medications, vitamins, and supplements, it may change how they work or increase the frequency or severity of side effects. Make sure that you tell your healthcare professional about anything that you are taking to avoid any negative drug interactions, including:
- Efgartigimod alfa
- Nipocalimab
- Rozanolixizumab
The normal dose is 70 mg subcutaneous injection (under the skin) once every month. A caregiver can administer this for you, or you can do it yourself.
Your doctor may increase your dose to 140 mg once a month, depending on how well the drug works for you.
Store the injection in a refrigerator and keep it out of reach of children.
Amgen Inc. and Novartis are the companies that manufacture Aimovig.
There are no lower-cost generic versions of Aimovig.
Clinical investigations of Aimovig did not identify any withdrawal effects. Regardless, talk to your doctor before discontinuing Aimovig. They may prescribe a drug other than Aimovig to help you avoid migraine attacks.
It is unclear whether Aimovig will harm your unborn child. Migraine headaches during pregnancy, on the other hand, can lead to issues like preeclampsia. The benefits of preventing migraines may exceed the risks to the infant. Talk to your doctor if you are already pregnant or if you have any plans to become pregnant. They will know or recommend what is best for you.
It is not known if Aimovig is found in breast milk, the effects on the breastfed infant, or the effects on milk production. Talk to your doctor if you are already breastfeeding or if you have any plans to breastfeed. They will know or recommend what is best for you.
