Important information about Diabeta
Diabeta belongs to a class of medicines called sulfonylureas. It helps lower blood glucose by stimulating the pancreas to release insulin, which helps reduce high blood sugar in people with type 2 diabetes.
Follow all directions given to you by your doctor and read all documents provided, including the full Prescribing Information, FDA-Approved Product Labeling, Instructions for Use, and Medication Guide before using Diabeta. However, the following is a synopsis of the general guidelines for the use of Diabeta:
- Diabeta is usually taken with breakfast or the first main meal of the day.
- Your dose may be adjusted based on blood glucose levels.
- If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember unless it is close to your next dose. If it is close to your next dose, skip the missed dose and take the next dose at the regular time. Do not take two doses at once.
- Be sure to stay hydrated while taking this medication. If you are dehydrated, this increases your risk of lactic acidosis.
- If you are taking other blood sugar-lowering medications (insulin, sulfonylureas), you may be at risk of low blood glucose (hypoglycemia). If you have symptoms of low blood sugar, such as feeling shaky, confused, and very hungry, check your blood glucose. If it is below 4mmol/L (70mg/dL), take 15 grams of sugar and check again in 15 minutes. If it is still low, take more sugar.
- Do not drink alcohol while taking this medication, as there is an additive dizziness and risk of fainting.
Some mild or common side effects of Diabeta include:
- Nausea.
- Heartburn.
- Stomach fullness.
- Blurred vision.
- Skin rash.
- Urticaria or hives.
- Weight gain.
Some individuals may experience serious side effects while using Diabeta. These side effects may require immediate medical attention. If you experience any of the following, contact your healthcare provider or seek emergency medical help:
- Low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) - symptoms may include sweating, shakiness, fast heartbeat, blurred vision, hunger, confusion, weakness, or fainting.
- Liver problems, including cholestatic jaundice or hepatitis - symptoms may include yellowing of the skin or eyes, dark urine, stomach pain, loss of appetite, or unusual tiredness.
- Serious life-threatening allergic reaction - symptoms may include hives, swelling, skin rash, trouble breathing, or severe itching.
These are not all of the possible side effects of Diabeta. You should always seek medical advice from your healthcare provider for any questions or concerns about your medical condition or treatment. Read all patient information, medication guides, or drug information sheets that come with this medication. You can also report adverse effects to the Food and Drug Administration at www.fda.gov/medwatch or 1-800-FDA-1088.
Before starting Diabeta, it is crucial to discuss any existing health conditions with your healthcare provider. You should be sure that your healthcare provider is aware of all your medical conditions, including:
- Elderly, debilitated, malnourished, adrenal, or pituitary problems may be more at risk of low blood sugar.
- Glucose 6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency due to the risk of hemolytic anemia.
- Liver disease.
- Kidney disease.
- Oral diabetes medicines such as sulfonylureas, including Diabeta, have been linked in some studies to an increased risk of cardiovascular death compared with treatment using diet alone or diet plus insulin. This warning is based on a long-term clinical study involving another sulfonylurea medicine, tolbutamide, and the FDA advises that similar risks may apply to other medicines in the same class because of their similar actions and chemical structure. Patients should discuss the potential risks and benefits of treatment with their healthcare provider.
Do not take Diabeta if you have:
- Known hypersensitivity to glyburide, sulfa medications, or any excipient.
- Type 1 diabetes.
- Diabetic ketoacidosis, with or without coma.
- Treatment with bosentan.
Diabeta is absorbed within about 1 hour and reaches peak levels at about 4 hours.
When Diabeta is taken with other prescription drugs, over-the-counter medications, vitamins, and supplements, it may change how they work or increase the frequency or severity of side effects. Make sure that you tell your healthcare professional about anything that you are taking to avoid any negative drug interactions, including:
- Bosentan - this combination should not be used because increased liver enzymes were seen when glyburide was taken with bosentan.
- Miconazole with oral diabetes medicines has been linked to severe hypoglycemia.
- NSAIDs, salicylates, sulfonamides, ACE inhibitors, fluoxetine, clarithromycin, MAO inhibitors, and beta blockers may increase the blood sugar-lowering effect and raise the risk of hypoglycemia.
- Fluoroquinolone antibiotics may increase the hypoglycemic effect of glyburide.
- The effect of warfarin and other coumarin derivatives may be increased or decreased.
- Rifampin may worsen glucose control by increasing glyburide metabolism.
- Thiazides, other diuretics, corticosteroids, phenothiazines, thyroid products, estrogens, calcium channel blockers, and isoniazid may cause hyperglycemia and loss of blood sugar control.
- Diabeta may increase cyclosporine levels and toxicity risk.
Diabeta tablets USP are available as 1.25 mg, 2.5 mg, and 5 mg tablets.
It should be stored at room temperature, out of the reach of children and pets.
It is manufactured by Sanofi-Aventis.
Yes, it is available from many manufacturers of generic drugs. Other brand names may include Glynase, Glynase PresTab, and Micronase.
Barring any of the above serious side effects, do not stop taking Diabeta without medical advice. Stopping may lead to high blood sugar or hyperglycemia, with symptoms such as increased thirst, frequent urination, blurred vision, tiredness, and weight loss.
Diabeta should be used during pregnancy only if the potential benefit justifies the risk, and many experts recommend insulin during pregnancy to keep blood glucose levels close to normal.
Talk to your doctor if you are already pregnant or if you have any plans to become pregnant. They will know or recommend what is best for you.
It is not known whether Diabeta passes into breast milk, but some sulfonylureas do.
Talk to your doctor if you are already breastfeeding or if you have any plans to breastfeed. They will know or recommend what is best for you.
