Important information about Drysol

The active ingredient in Drysol topical solution is aluminum chloride. While the exact mechanism of action for this drug is unknown, it is believed that the aluminium in the medication reacts with your body and creates a plug over the sweat ducts with adjacent skin cells. This reduces the amount of sweat that emerges from your sweat ducts. The sweat glands reopen when new skin develops in the area.

Follow all directions given to you by your doctor and read all documents provided, including the full Prescribing Information, FDA-Approved Product Labeling, Instructions for Use, and Medication Guide, before using Drysol. However, the following is a synopsis of the general guidelines for the use of Drysol:

  • Do not use on broken or freshly shaved skin.
  • For the best benefits, apply the medication at night and leave it on your skin for 6 to 8 hours.
  • To apply your medicine, use the applicator that came with it or a cotton ball.
  • After using the treatment on the affected area(s) of your underarms or armpits, wear a t-shirt to avoid it from rubbing off on your bed linen.
  • After use on the hands or feet, wrap them with plastic wrap and cover them with cotton gloves or socks. Leave your gloves or socks on while sleeping.
  • After applying to the scalp, wear a plastic shower cap to bed to prevent the medication from rubbing off onto your bed sheets.
  • In the morning, remove the covering from the treated skin areas and carefully wash or shampoo the skin before towel drying. Do not use plastic wrap for additional applications. You can rinse and reuse the plastic shower top.

The most common side effects of Drysol include:

  • Skin irritation.
  • Itching.
  • Dry skin or dryness in the area.

Some individuals may experience serious side effects while using Drysol. These side effects may require immediate medical attention. If you experience any of the following, contact your healthcare provider or seek emergency medical help:

Read all patient information, medication guides, or drug information sheets that come with this medication. You can also report adverse effects to the Food and Drug Administration at www.fda.gov/medwatch or 1-800-FDA-1088.

Before starting Drysol, it is crucial to discuss any existing health conditions with your healthcare provider. You should be sure that your healthcare provider is aware of all your medical conditions, including whether you have:

  • Kidney disease.

Your response to Drysol will be determined by your unique symptoms and the product you are taking. In general, you might expect to see decreased perspiration within a few days. After this period, your provider will most likely advise you to just use Drysol once or twice a week. Please notify your provider if you do not notice a decrease in perspiration after a few days of overnight use.

When Drysol is taken with other prescription drugs, over-the-counter medications, vitamins, and supplements, it may change how they work or increase the frequency or severity of side effects. Make sure that you tell your healthcare professional about anything that you are taking to avoid any negative drug interactions.
