Important information about Genvoya

How does Genvoya work?

Genvoya combines four antiretroviral medicines that work together to reduce the amount of HIV-1 in the blood (viral load) and support immune system function. It includes an integrase strand transfer inhibitor or INSTI (elvitegravir), a booster (cobicistat), and two nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors or NRTIs (emtricitabine and tenofovir alafenamide).

How do you use Genvoya?

Follow all directions given to you by your doctor and read all documents provided, including the full Prescribing Information, FDA-Approved Product Labeling, Instructions for Use, and Medication Guide before using Genvoya. However, the following is a synopsis of the general guidelines for the use of Genvoya:

Take Genvoya exactly as prescribed by your healthcare provider.

Take Genvoya 1 time each day with food.

If you are on dialysis, take your daily dose after dialysis.

Do not miss a dose of Genvoya.

Do not stop taking Genvoya without talking to your healthcare provider first.

If you take an antacid that contains aluminum hydroxide, magnesium hydroxide, or calcium carbonate, take it at least 2 hours before or after Genvoya.

What are the side effects of Genvoya?

Some mild or common side effects of Genvoya seen in clinical trials as compared to placebo include:

Nausea.

Some individuals may experience serious side effects while using Genvoya. These side effects may require immediate medical attention. If you experience any of the following, contact your healthcare provider or seek emergency medical help:

Severe allergic reactions, including swelling, rash, hives, wheezing, or anaphylaxis.

Worsening of hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection after stopping Genvoya, in people coinfected with HIV-1 and HBV.

New or worse kidney problems, including kidney failure.

Lactic acidosis (too much lactic acid in the blood) may present as weakness, fatigue, shortness of breath, stomach pain with nausea/ vomiting, or muscle pain.

Symptoms of severe liver problems include yellowing of the skin or eyes, loss of appetite for several days, stomach pain, or light-coloured stools.

Immune reconstitution syndrome (immune system changes after starting HIV treatment).

These are not all of the possible side effects of Genvoya. You should always seek medical advice from your healthcare provider for any questions or concerns about your medical condition or treatment. Read all patient information, medication guides, or drug information sheets that come with this medication. You can also report adverse effects to the Food and Drug Administration at www.fda.gov/medwatch or 1-800-FDA-1088.

What are the warnings or precautions for Genvoya?

Before starting Genvoya, it is crucial to discuss any existing health conditions with your healthcare provider. You should be sure that your healthcare provider is aware of all your medical conditions, including:

Liver problems, including hepatitis B virus infection.

Kidney problems.

Pregnancy or plans to become pregnant.

Breastfeeding or plans to breastfeed.

Are there any contraindications with Genvoya?

You should not take Genvoya if you take medications that are metabolized extensively by CYP3A enzymes or those that induce CYP3A enzymes. See drug interactions for more information.

How long does it take Genvoya to work?

Genvoya begins working after you start taking it regularly as prescribed, but it is important to take it every day to keep HIV under control and prevent resistance.

What interacts with Genvoya?

When Genvoya is taken with other prescription drugs, over-the-counter medications, vitamins, and supplements, it may change how they work or increase the frequency or severity of side effects. Make sure that you tell your healthcare professional about anything that you are taking to avoid any negative drug interactions, including:
