Important information about Lysteda
The active ingredient in Lysteda is tranexamic acid, which is an antihemorrhagic or antifibrinolytic agent. It stops the body from breaking down blood clots. This reduces the amount of bleeding by allowing your blood to clot.
Follow all directions given to you by your doctor and read all documents provided, including the full Prescribing Information, FDA-Approved Product Labeling, Instructions for Use, and Medication Guide, before using Lysteda. However, the following is a synopsis of the general guidelines for the use of Lysteda:
- Wait until your menstruation has begun before beginning to take Lysteda. Avoid taking it for more than five consecutive days.
- During your menstrual cycle, Lysteda is often taken three times a day for up to five days. No more than six tablets should be taken in a 24-hour period.
- Drink a full glass of water when taking Lysteda.
- Tranexamic acid can be taken with or without food.
- A Lysteda pill should never be broken, chewed, or crushed. Eat it whole.
The most common side effects of Lysteda include:
- Headaches.
- Back pain.
- Stomach pain.
- Muscle pain or joint pain.
- Tiredness.
- Muscle cramps.
Some individuals may experience serious side effects while using Lysteda. These side effects may require immediate medical attention. If you experience any of the following, contact your healthcare provider or seek emergency medical help:
- Severe allergic reaction: swelling of your face, tongue, or throat, hives, and shortness of breath.
- Blood clots: chest pain, trouble breathing, and arm or limb swelling, soreness, or redness.
- Changes in vision or eye problems.
These are not all of the possible side effects of Lysteda. You should always seek medical advice from your healthcare provider for any questions or concerns about your medical condition or treatment. Read all patient information, medication guides, or drug information sheets that come with this medication. You can also report adverse effects to the Food and Drug Administration at www.fda.gov/medwatch or 1-800-FDA-1088.
Before starting Lysteda, it is crucial to discuss any existing health conditions with your healthcare provider. You should be sure that your healthcare provider is aware of all your medical conditions, including whether you have:
- Issues with your eyes' blood vessels or ligneous conjunctivitis.
- Color blindness (only if tranexamic acid is being administered as an injection).
- A stroke history.
- A history of a brain hemorrhage.
- Thromboembolism (blood clot).
- Acute promyelocytic leukemia.
- Anemia.
- Kidney illness.
- Endometriosis
- Whether the interval between your monthly periods is less than 21 days or more than 35 days.
- Use a hormonal contraceptive.
Use hormonal birth control. Make use of a barrier method of birth control, like a condom or spermicide-treated diaphragm. When taken in conjunction with Lysteda, hormonal contraception (birth control pills, injections, implants, skin patches, and vaginal rings) may raise your risk of heart attack, stroke, or blood clots.
Having a blood clot now or in the past (e.g., blood clot in eyes, pulmonary embolism, stroke, deep vein thrombosis).
An illness that increases your risk of blood clots.
According to certain clinical trials, those who took tranexamic acid (Lysteda) for the first time experienced less blood loss during their menstrual cycles. Note that some people may not notice the effects of tranexamic acid (Lysteda) for several menstrual cycles. If tranexamic acid (Lysteda) doesn't seem to help after taking it for at least two menstrual cycles, or if the medicine seems to have stopped functioning, talk to your doctor.
When Lysteda is taken with other prescription drugs, over-the-counter medications, vitamins, and supplements, it may change how they work or increase the frequency or severity of side effects. Make sure that you tell your healthcare professional about anything that you are taking to avoid any negative drug interactions, including:
- Hormonal birth control (such as birth control pills, injections, implants, skin patches, and vaginal rings).
- Tretinoin (Vesanoid).
- Chemotherapy medication to treat leukemia.
- Oral tretinoin.
- Any type of medication to treat a bleeding episode or a blood clot.
- Factor IX complex (Profilnine) or anti-inhibitor coagulant complex (Feiba, Kcentra, and others).
The typical dose is 1,300 mg (2 tranexamic acid tablets) by mouth three times a day, for up to 5 days during your monthly menstrual period.
Your dose might differ if you have kidney problems.
If you miss a dose, take it when you remember, and then take your next dose at least six hours later. Do not take more than two tablets at a time to make up for missed doses.
Store at room temperature and keep out of reach of children.
Lysteda is manufactured by Ferring Pharmaceuticals.
Yes, there are several lower-cost generic names available.
If your bleeding considerably slows down or stops, you can stop taking Lysteda early; nevertheless, you shouldn't take it for less than three days or more than five days.
Generally, the manufacturer does not recommend taking Lysteda if you are pregnant. Talk to your doctor if you are already pregnant or if you have any plans to become pregnant. They will know or recommend what is best for you.
Lysteda is found in breast milk, but it’s not known what effects it may have on your breastfed infant. Talk to your doctor if you are already breastfeeding or if you have any plans to breastfeed. They will know or recommend what is best for you.
