What is Pancrease?
Pancrease (lipase/amylase/protease) is a prescription pancreatic enzyme product used for the treatment of exocrine pancreatic insufficiency (EPI). EPI occurs when the pancreas does not produce enough digestive enzymes to properly break down food. This condition is commonly seen in people with cystic fibrosis, chronic pancreatitis, or other disorders affecting the pancreas. Common side effects may include abdominal pain, bloating, constipation, diarrhea, and changes in bowel movements.

Important information about Pancrease
The active ingredient in Pancrease is pancrelipase. Pancrelipase contains three key digestive enzymes: lipase, which helps break down fats; amylase, which helps break down carbohydrates; and protease, which helps break down proteins. They replace the enzymes normally produced by the pancreas. The delayed-release, enteric-coated formulation allows the enzymes to pass through the stomach and be released in the small intestine, where digestion occurs. This helps reduce symptoms of malabsorption such as steatorrhea (fatty stools), weight loss, and poor nutrient absorption.
Follow all directions given to you by your doctor and read all documents provided, including the full Prescribing Information, FDA-Approved Product Labeling, Instructions for Use, and Medication Guide before using Pancrease. However, the following is a synopsis of the general guidelines for the use of Pancrease:
- Take Pancrease with every meal and snack.
- Swallow delayed-release capsules whole with enough liquid.
- Do not crush or chew the capsules, as this may damage the enteric-coated enzymes.
- If you have trouble swallowing capsules, you may open them and sprinkle the contents of the capsule on a small amount of acidic soft food such as applesauce. Swallow immediately without chewing.
- Do not mix with non-acidic foods or liquids.
- If you miss a dose, take it with your next meal or snack. Do not double the dose to make up for a missed dose.
Some mild or common side effects of Pancrease seen in clinical trials include:
- Abdominal pain.
- Bloating.
- Constipation.
- Diarrhea.
- Nausea.
Some individuals may experience serious side effects while using Pancrease. These side effects may require immediate medical attention. If you experience any of the following, contact your healthcare provider or seek emergency medical help:
- Signs of allergic reactions such as hives, skin rashes, swelling, or difficulty breathing.
- Severe stomach pain or worsening gastrointestinal symptoms.
- Fibrosing colonopathy (a rare but serious condition causing bowel stricture), especially with high doses in pediatric patients with cystic fibrosis.
- High uric acid levels and gout symptoms such as joint pain, swelling, and warmth of joints.
These are not all of the possible side effects of Pancrease. You should always seek medical advice from your healthcare provider for any questions or concerns about your medical condition or treatment. Read all patient information, medication guides, or drug information sheets that come with this medication. You can also report adverse effects to the Food and Drug Administration at www.fda.gov/medwatch or 1-800-FDA-1088.
Before starting Pancrease, it is crucial to discuss any existing health conditions with your healthcare provider. You should be sure that your healthcare provider is aware of all your medical conditions, including:
- Insulin-dependent diabetes.
- Gout or high uric acid (hyperuricemia).
- Kidney disease.
Pancrease is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to porcine proteins or any component of the formulation, or if you are having an acute pancreatitis episode.
Pancrease begins working during the meal in which it is taken. Improvement in digestive symptoms such as bloating, steatorrhea, and weight loss may occur over days to weeks with consistent use.
Pancrease works locally in the digestive tract and has minimal systemic absorption. Drug interactions are not commonly reported. However, tell your healthcare provider about all prescription drugs, over-the-counter medications, and supplements you are taking.
