Important information about Venofer

The active ingredient in Venofer is iron sucrose, which is an iron supplement. It aids in resupplying your body with this vital mineral. Red blood cell production in your bone marrow is aided by iron. Additionally, it aids in the production of hemoglobin, a protein found in red blood cells that is necessary for carrying oxygen to various bodily areas.

Follow all directions given to you by your doctor and read all documents provided, including the full Prescribing Information, FDA-Approved Product Labeling, Instructions for Use, and Medication Guide, before using Venofer. However, the following is a synopsis of the general guidelines for the use of Venofer:

  • The infusion process for this medication can take up to 2.5 hours.
  • If you experience any burning, pain, or swelling around the IV needle during an iron sucrose injection, let your provider know.
  • To make sure you don't have an allergic reaction, you will be constantly monitored for at least half an hour.
  • To assist your doctor in deciding how long to treat you with Venofer, you will require regular medical testing.

The most common side effects of Venofer seen in clinical trials include:

  • Muscle cramps.
  • Low blood pressure (hypotension).
  • High blood pressure (hypertension).
  • Nausea and vomiting.
  • Swelling in the stomach area.
  • Stomach pain.
  • Back pain.
  • Chest pain.
  • Constipation.
  • Light-headedness.
  • Irritation at the injection site.
  • Peripheral edema (swelling in arms, legs, or ankles)

Some individuals may experience serious side effects while using Venofer. These side effects may require immediate medical attention. If you experience any of the following, contact your healthcare provider or seek emergency medical help:

  • Fatigue, weakness, skin discoloration, and joint or stomach pain are all signs of high iron levels.
  • Severe, life-threatening hypersensitivity or allergic reactions, including headache, loss of consciousness, fever, rash, hives, chills, flushing (feeling warm all of a sudden), exhaustion, shortness of breath, and chest pain.

These are not all of the possible adverse reactions of Venofer. You should always seek medical advice from your healthcare provider for any questions or concerns about your medical condition or treatment. Read all patient information, medication guides, or drug information sheets that come with this medication. You can also report adverse effects to the Food and Drug Administration at www.fda.gov/medwatch or 1-800-FDA-1088.

Before starting Venofer, it is crucial to discuss any existing health conditions with your healthcare provider. You should be sure that your healthcare provider is aware of all your medical conditions, including whether you have:

  • A known hypersensitivity reaction to an iron injection, you should not use this medication.
  • Iron overload (accumulation of too much iron).
  • Cardiac disorders like bradycardia (slow heart rate).
  • Low blood pressure.

  • Iron deficiency is not the cause of anemia.
  • Iron overload or disruptions in iron usage.
  • Hypersensitivity reactions to Venofer, iron sucrose, or any of its excipients.
  • First trimester of pregnancy.

Venofer, also known as iron sucrose, is an iron replacement that is rapidly absorbed by the body. Your serum ferritin levels increase in a day or so. Your ferritin levels can be used to determine the amount of iron in your body because ferritin is a protein that stores iron. Additionally, the rise in your transferrin saturation (TSAT) takes approximately a week.

When Venofer is taken with other prescription drugs, over-the-counter medications, vitamins, and supplements, it may change how they work or increase the frequency or severity of side effects. Make sure that you tell your healthcare professional about anything that you are taking to avoid any negative drug interactions, including:

  • Oral iron products like ferrous fumarate, ferrous gluconate, ferrous sulfate, and others.

A qualified medical practitioner administers Venofer (iron sucrose) intravenously (IV) into the veins.

CKD in adult patients:

Non-dialysis dependent: Over two weeks, five single-dose vials of 200 mg IV iron are administered, for a total therapy of 1,000 mg. The drug is administered as an infusion over 15 minutes or as a gradual injection over 2 to 5 minutes.

Hemodialysis: Ten doses of 100 mg IV iron therapy every dialysis session make up the 1,000 mg cumulative dose treatment. The drug is administered as an infusion over 15 minutes or as a gradual injection over 2 to 5 minutes.

For those who require peritoneal dialysis, the usual dosage is 300 mg intravenously on day 1, 300 mg two weeks later, and 400 mg two weeks later. The drug is infused throughout one and a half to two and a half hours.

Children with CKD who are two years of age or older (for iron maintenance treatment):

Those who require hemodialysis: The weight of your child will determine the dosage. For three months, the usual dosage is 0.5 mg/kg of body weight (maximum 100 mg) administered intravenously every other week. The drug is administered as an infusion throughout 5 to 60 minutes or as a gradual injection over 5 minutes.

Those who require peritoneal dialysis but are on erythropoietin-stimulating medications or who do not require dialysis: The weight of your child will determine the dosage. For three months, the usual dosage is 0.5 mg/kg of body weight (up to 100 mg) administered intravenously each month. The drug is administered as an infusion throughout 5 to 60 minutes or as a gradual injection over 5 minutes.

Store at room temperature and out of reach of children.

American Regent, Inc. is the company that manufactures Venofer.

No, there is no generic version of Venofer.

There is no specific way to stop Venofer. Venofer should be stopped right away if hypersensitivity responses or indications of intolerance arise during administration.

If you are or intend to become pregnant, let your doctor know. If you experience a severe reaction to iron sucrose during your second or third trimester, it can be harmful to the fetus. On the other hand, issues including low birth weight or early delivery could result from failing to address iron deficiency anemia during pregnancy in pregnant women. There may be more advantages to managing your illness while pregnant than disadvantages.

Talk to your doctor if you are already breastfeeding or if you have any plans to breastfeed. They will know or recommend what is best for you.
