Important information about Zenpep

How does Zenpep work?

The active ingredients in Zenpep are three pancrelipases or pancreatic enzymes known as lipase, protease, and amylase. These three enzymes play an important role in ensuring our food is digested. However, people with pancreatic issues have a hard time producing these enzymes, thus making it difficult to digest their food, causing symptoms of abdominal pain or tenderness, loss of appetite, weight loss, and much more. These enzymes are derived from pig pancreases and then packaged into capsules that are to be taken daily with meals. Other pancreatic enzyme products on the market include Creon and Viokace, among others. Generally, you should not switch between products without consulting your doctor first.

How do you use Zenpep?

Follow all directions given to you by your doctor and read all documents provided, including the full Prescribing Information, FDA-Approved Product Labeling, Instructions for Use, and Medication Guide before using Zenpep. However, the following is a synopsis of the general guidelines for the use of Zenpep:

  • Zenpep should be used exactly as prescribed. Do not take more Zenpep capsules in a day than what has been prescribed for you.
  • The dose of Zenpep will vary from person to person based on your body weight, symptoms, and total fat intake. If you experience symptoms of abdominal pain, bloating, fatty stools, or weight loss, these could be signs that your dose needs to be adjusted as your body is not absorbing nutrients properly.
  • Zenpep is typically taken daily with each meal or snack. However, if you have a lot of meals or snacks throughout the day, be careful not to go over your daily recommended dose.
  • Take the capsules whole with a full glass of water or juice. Do not crush, chew, or hold the contents in your mouth, as doing so can irritate the tissue and lining of your mouth. For those who have trouble swallowing, capsules may be opened and the contents sprinkled on acidic, soft foods like applesauce, bananas, or pears and taken immediately for easier administration. Do not sprinkle on other foods without consulting your doctor first.
  • For infants, Zenpep may be given in 2 ways:

--- Similar to adults, the capsule may be opened and contents sprinkled on a small amount of applesauce, bananas, or pears each time the baby breastfeeds or has formula. Once sprinkled on food, it must be given immediately. To minimize mouth irritation, proceed with breastfeeding or formula right away to help wash the contents of the capsule down. You can check your baby’s mouth to make sure it has all been swallowed. Do not mix Zenpep capsule contents into a bottle of breast milk or formula.

--- Alternatively, you may also open the capsule and sprinkle the contents directly into the baby’s mouth and immediately follow with breastfeeding or formula. Again, check the baby’s mouth to ensure all the medicine has been swallowed.

  • If you miss a dose, skip the missed dose and wait until your next meal/snack to take your next dose (or for a baby, wait until the next feeding). If you are unsure how to proceed, call your doctor for further guidance.

What are the side effects of Zenpep?

The most common side effects of Zenpep seen in clinical trials as compared to placebo include:

  • Headache
  • Bruising
  • Cough
  • Feeling full after eating very little

Some individuals may experience serious side effects while using Zenpep. These side effects may require immediate medical attention. If you experience any of the following, contact your healthcare provider or seek emergency medical help:

  • Mouth irritation, especially if the capsules are not swallowed completely.
  • Hyperuricemia or high blood uric acid levels. Signs to watch for include pain, stiffness, or redness/swelling of your joints.
  • Signs of fibrosing colonopathy such as stomach pain, bloating, constipation, nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea. This is a rare bowel disorder that is more common in children with cystic fibrosis who have been taking Zenep at high doses for a long time.
  • Signs of a severe allergic reaction such as hives, rash, difficulty breathing, or swelling of the face, lips, eyes, or tongue.

These are not all of the possible side effects of Zenpep. You should always seek medical advice from your healthcare provider for any questions or concerns about your medical condition or treatment. Read all patient information, medication guides, or drug information sheets that come with this medication. You can also report adverse effects to the Food and Drug Administration at www.fda.gov/medwatch or 1-800-FDA-1088.

What are the warnings or precautions for Zenpep?

Before starting Zenpep, it is crucial to discuss any existing health conditions with your healthcare provider. You should be sure that your healthcare provider is aware of all your medical conditions, including if you have:
