How long does farxiga stay in your system?

Farxiga (dapagliflozin) is an oral sodium‑glucose cotransporter‑2 (SGLT2) inhibitor used once daily for type 2 diabetes, heart failure, and chronic kidney disease.

Half‑life and elimination

Farxiga has an elimination half‑life of approximately 13 hours. Because a drug is generally considered cleared after 4–5 half‑lives, Farxiga will remain in your system for about 52–65 hours (roughly 2–3 days).

Onset of action

  • Peak blood levels occur within 2 hours of oral dosing.
  • Initial glucose‑lowering effects begin quickly, but it may take up to one week of daily dosing to see full glycemic benefit.

Discontinuation considerations

Do not stop Farxiga without consulting your healthcare provider. Abrupt discontinuation can worsen glycemic control, heart failure, or kidney function. If side effects or efficacy concerns arise, discuss alternative therapies with your provider.

Common side effects

  • Genital and urinary tract infections
  • Increased urination
  • Nasopharyngitis (cold symptoms)
  • Back pain
  • Weight loss
  • Nausea and constipation

Serious risks

  • Severe allergic reactions (hives, facial swelling, breathing difficulty)
  • Hypoglycemia when combined with insulin or sulfonylureas
  • Dehydration, acute kidney injury, hypotension
  • Diabetic ketoacidosis
  • Fournier’s gangrene (rare perineal infection)

Indications

  • Type 2 diabetes mellitus (monotherapy or add‑on)
  • Reduction of heart failure–related hospitalizations
  • Slowing progression of chronic kidney disease
