Armour Thyroid FAQs
Who manufactures Armour Thyroid?
Armour Thyroid and its design are trademarks of Allergan Sales, LLC, an AbbVie company.
What is Armour Thyroid used for?
Armour Thyroid is a prescription medication that is a combination of the triiodothyronine (T3) and thyroxine (T4) thyroid hormones made by your thyroid gland. It is used to treat hypothyroidism, including Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, a condition where your thyroid gland does not produce enough thyroid hormone. It is also used to decrease thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) levels in people with thyroid goiters, nodules, or thyroid cancer.
Armour Thyroid should not be used for weight loss. Normal doses of this medication will not work for weight loss, and large doses of this medication may cause serious, possibly life-threatening side effects.
What are the possible side effects of this medication?
- Increased heart rate, pulse, or heart palpitations
- Anxiety or nervousness
- Chest pain
- Tremors
- Muscle weakness
- Excessive sweating
- Diarrhea
- Hair loss
If left untreated, your thyroid levels can get very high and cause serious and sometimes life-threatening side effects such as:
- Increased risk of serious cardiovascular (heart) problems. This is more likely to occur in older adults and those with heart disease, coronary artery disease, irregular heartbeat, or high blood pressure.
- Dangerously low stress hormone levels (adrenal crisis). If you experience constant fatigue, muscle weakness, loss of appetite, dizziness, or stomach pain seek immediate medical attention.
- Worsening diabetes. This medication can change the dose you need for your diabetes medications. Let your healthcare provider know if you notice any blood sugar levels that are higher than normal.
- Although rare, some people can have an allergic reaction to Armour Thyroid. The symptoms can be mild or serious. If you are having mild symptoms such as a rash, contact your healthcare provider immediately. If you experience serious symptoms such as swelling of your face, tongue, and throat or shortness of breath, call 911 or seek immediate medical attention.
This is not the entire list of possible side effects. Contact your healthcare professional for medical advice about any possible adverse effects you experience while taking Armour Thyroid. You can report your adverse effects to the FDA at 1-800-FDA-1088 or www.fda.gov/medwatch.
Are there drug interactions with Armour Thyroid?
When Armour Thyroid is taken with other drugs, it can change how they work or make some adverse effects more likely or severe. You should ask your healthcare provider if any of the prescription drugs, over-the-counter (OTC) medications, vitamins, or supplements you take may interact with Armour Thyroid.
Certain medications such as colestipol, cholestyramine, colesevelam, antacids that contain calcium or magnesium, sucralfate, simethicone, iron, sodium polystyrene sulfonate, and orlistat may decrease the amount of thyroid hormone that is absorbed by your body. If you are taking any of these medications, separate them from Armour Thyroid by at least 4 hours.
Some other meds that can interact with this thyroid medication include blood thinners (warfarin), digoxin, and estrogen-containing products (including birth control pills). Make sure your healthcare provider is aware of all the prescription drugs, over-the-counter (OTC) medications, vitamins, or supplement you are taking before starting Armour Thyroid.
