What is Baqsimi?
Baqsimi is a dry glucagon nasal powder used for the treatment of severe hypoglycemia (low blood glucose levels) in people 4 years of age and older with type 1 or type 2 diabetes. You spray it into one nostril, but you do not have to inhale it. Like other emergency glucagon drugs, you and your caregivers should understand when and how to use Baqsimi before you require assistance.

Important information about Baqsimi
The active ingredient in Baqsimi is glucagon, a natural hormone that your body produces to elevate blood sugar.
Typically, your body stores the sugar you obtain from food in your liver until you need it later. When your blood sugar falls too low, glucagon signals your body to release stored sugar into your bloodstream. When this happens, your blood sugar level rises.
Additionally, your body can detect and regulate your blood sugar levels. However, if you have diabetes or consume too much insulin, this mechanism may not function properly. Baqsimi is used in a low blood sugar emergency if you are unable to eat or drink and require help from someone else to recover.
Follow all directions given to you by your doctor and read all documents provided, including the full Prescribing Information, FDA-Approved Product Labeling, Instructions for Use, and Medication Guide before using Baqsimi. However, the following is a synopsis of the general guidelines for the use of Baqsimi:
- Make sure your carer and anyone around you know where you keep your Baqsimi and how to use it correctly before you need them.
- Be sure you recognize signs of severe hypoglycemia such as blurred vision, slurred speech, seizures, or fainting.
- Baqsimi contains a single dose of medicine and cannot be reused.
- The Baqsimi device should be administered through one side of the nose (nostril); however, it is not necessary to inhale. The tip of the container is inserted into one nostril, and the plunger is then used to deliver the medicine.
- Baqsimi is effective even if you have a cold or are using cold medications.
- Act fast. Having extremely low blood sugar for an extended period can be hazardous.
- After administering Baqsimi, the carer should immediately seek emergency medical assistance.
- When you can safely ingest food or drink, your carer should provide you with both a fast-acting and a long-acting supply of sugar.
The most common side effects of Baqsimi seen in clinical trials include:
- Nausea.
- Vomiting.
- Red or watery eyes.
- Runny nose.
- Stuffy nose.
- Upper respiratory tract irritation.
Some individuals may experience serious side effects while using Baqsimi. These side effects may require immediate medical attention. If you experience any of the following, contact your healthcare provider or seek emergency medical help:
- Serious allergic reactions include hives, itching, swelling of the face or tongue, and difficulty breathing.
- High blood pressure in certain people with tumors in their adrenal glands.
These are not all of the possible side effects of Baqsimi. You should always seek medical advice from your healthcare provider for any questions or concerns about your medical condition or treatment. Read all patient information, medication guides, or drug information sheets that come with this medication. You can also report adverse effects to the Food and Drug Administration at www.fda.gov/medwatch or 1-800-FDA-1088.
Before starting Baqsimi, it is crucial to discuss any existing health conditions with your healthcare provider. You should be sure that your healthcare provider is aware of all your medical conditions, including:
- Tumor in your pancreas (insulinoma).
- Pheochromocytoma (adrenal gland tumor).
- Adrenal gland problems like adrenal insufficiency.
- Have not eaten or drunk in a long time (prolonged fasting or famine).
- Chronic hypoglycemia.
- Pheochromocytoma (tumour located above the adrenal glands).
- Insulinoma (a pancreatic tumour).
Baqsimi should work within about 15 minutes. However, if your symptoms do not improve after 15 minutes of using Baqsimi, it is recommended that you take another dose from a different device while waiting for emergency medical attention.
When Baqsimi is taken with other prescription drugs, over-the-counter medications, vitamins, and supplements, it may change how they work or increase the frequency or severity of side effects. There are no clear drug interactions with other medications, but it is worth speaking to a healthcare professional to avoid any adverse reactions.
For extremely low blood sugar, the normal dose of glucagon is 3 mg (1 intranasal device) sprayed into one nostril as needed.
If your blood sugar remains low after 15 minutes, another 3 mg dose from a new device can be administered while waiting for emergency medical assistance.
Store at room temperature and keep out of reach of children.
Amphastar Pharmaceuticals is the company that manufactures Baqsimi.
There are no generic versions available of Baqsimi.
Baqsimi is only used in emergency situations and is not typically taken every day.
