Important information about Cyclogyl

How does Cyclogyl work?

The active ingredient in Cyclogyl is cyclopentolate hydrochloride. Cyclogyl works by inhibiting the action of acetylcholine in the eye. This relaxes the muscles that govern the pupil and lens, causing the pupil to dilate (mydriasis) and briefly preventing the eye from focusing (cycloplegia). Doctors primarily utilise it during eye exams to obtain a clear image of the inside of the eye or to assess refractive problems in children.

How do you use Cyclogyl?

Follow all directions given to you by your doctor and read all documents provided, including the full Prescribing Information, FDA-Approved Product Labeling, Instructions for Use, and Medication Guide before using Cyclogyl. However, the following is a synopsis of the general guidelines for the use of Cyclogyl:

This medication is often administered about 40 to 50 minutes before an eye test or other procedure.

A healthcare provider will insert the eyedrops into your eyes.

To use cyclopentolate (Cyclogyl), tilt your head backward and stare upward. Then, gently draw your lower eyelid down to create a little pocket, and squeeze one drop of medication into it.

After you've received the drops, close your eyes for 2 or 3 minutes with your head tilted down, without blinking or squinting. Gently push your finger on the inside corner of your eye to prevent liquid from flowing into your tear duct.

Let your optometrist know if you wear contacts. If you wear contact lenses, you'll need to remove them before receiving cyclopentolate (Cyclogyl) drops in your eye(s).

What are the side effects of Cyclogyl?

Some mild and common side effects of cyclopentolate seen in clinical trials as compared to placebo include:

  • Blurred vision.
  • Eye irritation.
  • Drowsiness.
  • Sensitive to light.
  • Constipation.
  • Burning sensation in the eye.

Some individuals may experience serious side effects while using Cyclogyl. These side effects may require immediate medical attention. If you experience any of the following, contact your healthcare provider or seek emergency medical help:

  • Allergic reaction to the medication, such as hives, swelling, or a skin rash.

These are not all of the possible side effects of Cyclogyl. You should always seek medical advice from your healthcare provider for any questions or concerns about your medical condition or treatment. Read all patient information, medication guides, or drug information sheets that come with this medication. You can also report adverse effects to the Food and Drug Administration at www.fda.gov/medwatch or 1-800-FDA-1088.

What are the warnings or precautions for Cyclogyl?

Before starting Cyclogyl, it is crucial to discuss any existing health conditions with your healthcare provider. You should be sure that your healthcare provider is aware of all your medical conditions, including:

  • If you have a history of severe allergic reactions to Cyclogyl or have angle-closure glaucoma, you should not take it.
  • If you have narrow-angle glaucoma, you should tell your doctor before using Cyclogyl.
  • Conjunctivitis.
  • Down’s syndrome.
  • Cyclopentolate can affect your brain or central nervous system (CNS). Children and babies may have a higher risk of developing these side effects.

Are there any contraindications with Cyclogyl?

What interacts with Cyclogyl?

Make sure that you tell your healthcare professional about anything that you are taking to avoid any negative drug interactions, including:

  • Atropine.
  • Pilocarpine.
