What is Dupixent ?

Dupixent (dupilumab) is a prescription medication used to treat moderate-to-severe asthma, atopic dermatitis, and chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps. Important information about Dupixent

The active ingredient in Dupixent, dupilumab, is a monoclonal antibody and is considered an interleukin-4 receptor alpha antagonist. Due to this, it is unlike traditional treatments for atopic dermatitis, such as topical corticosteroids or immunosuppressants, and works by inhibiting the signaling of two proteins called interleukin-4 (IL-4) and interleukin-13 (IL-13). These proteins play a crucial role in the inflammatory response that leads to the characteristic symptoms of inflammation in different parts of the body. This includes itching, redness, wheezing, cough, congestion, and flaky skin.

Follow all directions given to you by your doctor and read all documents provided, including the full Prescribing Information, FDA-Approved Product Labeling, Instructions for Use, and Medication Guide before using Dupixent. However, the following is a synopsis of the general guidelines for the use of Dupixent:

  • Double-check that your dosage is correct. Often, your first dose will be higher than your remaining dosages. Consult your doctor to ensure you are clear about whether you need to inject twice (in two different locations) on your first dose, or if you need just a singular dose
  • You can inject the pre-filled pen or the pre-filled syringe in your upper thigh, or stomach area (avoid the belly button by 2 inches), or if you are a caregiver, you can administer the shot in the upper arm.
  • Do not stop taking your steroid medications unless your healthcare provider tells you to do so. You could suffer from some severe side effects if you suddenly stop these medications
  • Remember that your use of live vaccines should be completed before you start Dupixent; ask your doctor which timeline is best for you.
  • After you have injected Dupixent, throw your used pens and syringes in a sharps disposal container.

The most common side effects of Dupixent seen in clinical trials as compared to placebo include:

  • Cold sores
  • Eye redness
  • Injection site reaction. Symptoms could include:
  • Bruising
  • Swelling
  • Pain
  • Itchy eye (eye pruritus)
  • Conjunctivitis and keratitis
  • Dry eye
  • Viral infections (such as genital herpes)
  • Toothache
  • Sore throat
  • Blurred vision
  • Muscle pain
  • Joint pain (arthralgia)
  • Dizziness
  • Upper respiratory tract infection. Symptoms could include:
  • Cough
  • Fever
  • Trouble breathing

Some individuals may experience serious side effects while using Dupixent. These side effects may require immediate medical attention. If you experience any of the following, contact your healthcare provider or seek emergency medical help:

  • Serious allergic reaction. This could include anaphylaxis, serum sickness, or serum sickness-like reactions.
  • Symptoms could include:
  • Fast heartbeat
  • Nausea
  • Hives
  • Vomiting
  • Swelling of your lips, tongue, and face
  • Rash
  • Fever
  • Blood vessel inflammation
  • Serious parasitic infections
  • Increased risk of worsening asthma

These are not all of the possible side effects of Dupixent. You should always seek medical advice from your healthcare provider for any questions or concerns about your medical condition or treatment. Read all patient information, medication guides, or drug information sheets that come with this medication. You can also report adverse effects to the Food and Drug Administration at www.fda.gov/medwatch or 1-800-FDA-1088.

Before starting Dupixent, it is crucial to discuss any existing health conditions with your healthcare provider. You should be sure that your healthcare provider is aware of all your medical conditions, including if you have:

  • Asthma
  • Eosinophilic esophagitis
  • Chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyposis (CRSwNP)
  • Prurigo nodularis and also have asthma
  • Eye problems
  • A parasitic (helminth) infection
  • An appointment to receive any vaccinations
  • It is recommended that you do not receive a “live vaccine” immediately before or during treatment with Dupixent.

Dupixent (dupilumab) is contraindicated in the following situations:

  • Hypersensitivity to dupilumab or any of its components
  • Active infections, including tuberculosis (TB) or herpes simplex virus (HSV) infections, without proper management

Dupixent (dupilumab) may start to show noticeable effects within 2 to 4 weeks of treatment, particularly for conditions like atopic dermatitis. For asthma or chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps, it can take several weeks to a few months to experience full benefits. Your doctor will monitor progress and adjust treatment as needed.

When Dupixent is taken with other prescription drugs, over-the-counter medications, vitamins, and supplements, it may change how they work or increase the frequency or severity of side effects. Make sure that you tell your healthcare professional about anything that you are taking to avoid any negative drug interactions, including:

  • Topical, oral, or inhaled corticosteroid medicines
  • Asthma medicines
