Important information about Epipen Jr
The active ingredient in EpiPen Jr is epinephrine. Epinephrine is an alpha and beta-adrenergic receptor agonist that is effective in the treatment of anaphylaxis. When the EpiPen Jr Auto-Injector is used, the effects of epinephrine cause the airways to open, raise a dropping blood pressure, reverse hives, and reduce swelling of the face, lips, and throat.
Follow all directions given to you by your doctor and read all documents provided, including the full Prescribing Information and patient information, before using EpiPen Jr. However, the following is a synopsis of the general guidelines for the use of EpiPen Jr:
- Use EpiPen Jr at the first sign of a severe allergic reaction or anaphylaxis.
- The EpiPen Jr should only be used for children weighing between 15 and 30 kg. For children and adults who weigh more than 30 kg, use a regular EpiPen.
- To use the EpiPen Jr correctly, first remove the device from its carrying case. Grasp the auto-injector with the orange tip pointing downward. Remove the blue safety release cap with your other hand. Firmly press the orange tip against the middle of the outer thigh. Hold the injector in place for the full count to ensure the correct dose is delivered. If you inject a young child, hold their leg firmly in place before and during the injection to prevent injuries. After use, seek immediate emergency medical help and go to the emergency room.
- Do not inject the EpiPen Jr into the buttocks or veins (intravenously). It is only meant for intramuscular use in the middle of the outer thigh.
- Caregivers and patients should be trained on proper use before an emergency occurs.
- If accidental injection occurs, seek medical help immediately.
Some mild or common side effects of EpiPen Jr seen in clinical trials include:
- Palpitations or rapid heartbeat.
- Shakiness or tremor.
- Sweating.
- Headache.
- Pale skin or cold extremities.
- Redness or swelling at the injection site.
Some individuals may experience serious side effects while using EpiPen Jr. These side effects may require immediate medical attention. If you experience any of the following after using EpiPen Jr, contact your healthcare provider or seek emergency medical help:
- Severe chest pain.
- Trouble breathing or worsening breathing difficulty.
- Irregular heartbeats or signs of a heart problem.
- Severe high blood pressure symptoms, such as blurry vision or a severe headache.
- Persistent or worsening anxiety, confusion, or fainting.
These are not all of the possible side effects of EpiPen Jr. You should always seek medical advice from your healthcare provider for any questions or concerns about your medical condition or treatment. Read all patient information that comes with this medication. You can also report side effects to the Food and Drug Administration at www.fda.gov/medwatch or 1-800-FDA-1088.
Before starting EpiPen Jr, it is crucial to discuss any existing health conditions with your healthcare provider. You should be sure that your healthcare provider is aware of all your medical conditions, including if you have:
- Heart disease or a history of heart problems.
- High blood pressure.
- Thyroid disease or overactive thyroid.
- Parkinson’s disease.
- Diabetes, which may affect blood sugar.
- Pheochromocytoma (a type of adrenal gland tumor).
It’s important to note that there are no absolute contraindications in true anaphylaxis, as the risk of not treating is greater than the risk of epinephrine use.
EpiPen Jr works quickly. Epinephrine starts acting within minutes to help improve breathing, raise blood pressure, reduce swelling, and relieve severe itching during an anaphylactic reaction. However, it is not a cure; emergency medical care is always required after use.
When EpiPen Jr is taken with other prescription drugs, over-the-counter medications, vitamins, and supplements, it may change how they work or increase the frequency or severity of side effects. Make sure that you tell your healthcare professional about anything that you are taking to avoid any negative drug interactions, including:
- Beta-blockers may reduce the effectiveness of epinephrine injection.
- Certain antidepressants may enhance cardiovascular effects.
EpiPen Jr is available as a 0.15 mg epinephrine auto-injector. An EpiPen contains 0.3 mg.
It should be stored at room temperature, away from direct heat or light, and away from the reach of children. Check the expiration date regularly and replace it before it expires.
EpiPen Jr is manufactured by Viatris (formerly part of Mylan).
Yes. Epinephrine auto-injectors with equivalent pediatric dosing from other manufacturers may be available, but always consult a healthcare provider to confirm appropriate use and device instructions.
EpiPen Jr is not taken regularly like daily medicine. It is carried and used only during an allergic emergency. After using EpiPen Jr once, seek medical care immediately and follow any further instructions from healthcare professionals.
Talk to your doctor if you are already pregnant or if you have any plans to become pregnant. Epinephrine may be used in a life-threatening allergic emergency during pregnancy, but a healthcare professional will help you understand the risks and benefits.
Talk to your doctor if you are already breastfeeding or if you have any plans to breastfeed. Your healthcare provider can advise whether using EpiPen Jr in an emergency is appropriate and safe for you and your baby.
