Important information about Fasenra

How does Fasenra work?

The active ingredient in Fasenra is benralizumab, which is a biologic medication that blocks the interleukin-5 (IL-5) receptor. IL-5 is necessary for the production of eosinophils, which are white blood cells, that are a normal part of the immune system but can cause lung inflammation and contribute to asthma. Uncontrolled asthma can lead to the narrowing of your airways, causing wheezing, chest tightness, shortness of breath, and/or coughing.

Although the precise mechanism by which Fasenra (benralizumab) treats asthma is unknown, it is known that the drug lowers the body's eosinophil count. This is believed to reduce lung inflammation, which lessens severe asthma symptoms.

Fasenra should not be used to treat sudden asthma symptoms, exacerbations, or bronchospasms.

How do you use Fasenra?

Follow all directions given to you by your doctor and read all documents provided, including the full Prescribing Information, FDA-Approved Product Labeling, Instructions for Use, and Medication Guide before using Fasenra. However, the following is a synopsis of the general guidelines for the use of Fasenra:

  • Subcutaneous [SC] injections of Fasenra are administered beneath the skin:
  • For asthma, take one dose every four weeks for the first three weeks, and then every eight weeks after that.
  • For EGPA, once every four weeks.
  • Fasenra is available as a single-dose prefilled syringe and a single-dose autoinjector (Fasenra Pen). A medical professional administers Fasenra via a single-dose prefilled syringe.
  • Your healthcare practitioner should instruct you or your carer on how to properly prepare and administer the Fasenra injection using the Fasenra Pen if they determine that you or a carer are capable of administering the medication.
  • Fasenra should only be administered by a caregiver or medical professional to patients between the ages of 6 and 11.
  • The front of the thigh or the lower belly are the suggested injection sites for the Fasenra if you are administering the injection yourself. You can also receive an injection in your upper arm, but only from a caregiver.
  • Pick a new location for each injection that is at least 1 inch (3 cm) from the previous one. Avoid injecting into scars or damaged skin, through clothing, or into the 2-inch (5-cm) area surrounding your belly button where the skin is hard, scaly, bruised, or painful.
  • Depending on the severity of your asthma, doctors might opt for several different treatment options.

What are the side effects of Fasenra?

The most common side effects of Fasenra seen in clinical trials as compared to placebo include:

  • Injection site reaction such as redness, itching, or pain.
  • Headache.
  • Sore throat.
  • Fever.

Some individuals may experience serious side effects while using Fasenra. These side effects may require immediate medical attention. If you experience any of the following, contact your healthcare provider or seek emergency medical help:

  • Allergic reactions, including anaphylaxis: breathing problems, hives, fever, facial, lip, or tongue swelling, rapid heartbeat, nausea, and vomiting.

These are not all of the possible side effects of benralizumab. You should always seek medical advice from your healthcare provider for any questions or concerns about your medical condition or treatment. Read all patient information, medication guides, or drug information sheets that come with this medication. You can also report adverse effects to the Food and Drug Administration at www.fda.gov/medwatch or 1-800-FDA-1088.

What are the warnings or precautions for Fasenra?

Before starting Fasenra, it is crucial to discuss any existing health conditions with your healthcare provider. You should be sure that your healthcare provider is aware of all your medical conditions, including if you:

  • Possess any allergies.
  • Are using high-dose steroid medications, either orally or inhaled, plus medicines called long-acting beta-agonists.
  • Unless directed by your healthcare provider, do not discontinue using your oral corticosteroid medications. This could lead to the recurrence of additional symptoms that the corticosteroid Medication was able to alleviate.
  • Have a parasitic infestation (helminth), such as tapeworms, roundworms, or pinworms.
  • Intend to get pregnant or are already pregnant.

Are there any contraindications with Fasenra?

You should not use Fasenra if you have had a known hypersensitivity reaction to benralizumab or any of the inactive ingredients in the product.

How long does it take Fasenra to work?

Fasenra works within the first 24 hours. Following the drug, patients showed a considerable decrease in their blood eosinophil count. Additionally, following four weeks of Fasenra medication, lung functions improved, and asthma exacerbation symptoms began to lessen.

What interacts with Fasenra?

When Fasenra is taken with other prescription drugs, over-the-counter medications, vitamins, and supplements, it may change how they work or increase the frequency or severity of side effects. Make sure that you tell your healthcare professional about anything that you are taking to avoid any negative drug interactions. No known drug interactions exist between Fasenra and other medications at this time.
