Movantik

The active ingredient in Movantik is naloxegol oxalate. One of the most frequent adverse effects of opiate pain medication is constipation. Opioids can bind to opioid receptors in the intestines and impact the function of the digestive system. For instance, they slow the passage of waste and food through the digestive tract.

Naloxegol is a peripherally acting mu-opioid receptor antagonist (PAMORA). Its mechanism of action involves preventing opioid drugs from binding to intestinal opioid receptors. This makes it easier for you to use the bathroom while on opioid pain medicines.

Follow all directions given to you by your doctor and read all documents provided, including the complete Prescribing Information, FDA-Approved Product Labeling, Instructions for Use, and Medication Guide before using Movantik. However, the following is a synopsis of the general guidelines for the use of Movantik:

• At least one hour before or two hours after your first meal of the day, take this medication on an empty stomach.
• You can smash the pill into a powder and combine it with four ounces of water if you are unable to swallow it whole. Stir and immediately drink this combination. Pour a little more water into the same glass, stir gently, and drink immediately to obtain the whole dose.
• Another way to administer Movantik is via a nasogastric (NG) feeding tube. Any Instructions for Use that come with your medication should be carefully read and followed. If you have any questions about these instructions, ask your physician or healthcare provider.
• If, after three days of treatment, your symptoms do not improve, give your doctor a call.

The most common side effects of Movantik seen in clinical trials include:

• Diarrhea.
• Nausea.
• Vomiting.
• Headache.
• Abdominal pain.

Some individuals may experience serious side effects while using Movantik. These side effects may require immediate medical attention. If you experience any of the following, contact your healthcare provider or seek emergency medical help:

• Severe diarrhea or severe stomach pain.
• Symptoms of opioid withdrawal: suicidal thoughts, anxiety, restlessness, irritability, cramping in the stomach, sweating, and chills.
• Allergic reaction: Hives, rash, blisters, reddening of the skin, swelling of the lips or tongue, and trouble breathing.

Before starting Movantik, it is crucial to discuss any existing health conditions with your healthcare provider. You should be sure that your healthcare provider is aware of all your medical conditions, including if you have:

• A known or suspected gastrointestinal (GI) blockage.
• Any other stomach or bowel (intestines) problems, including stomach ulcer, Crohn’s disease, diverticulitis, cancer of the stomach or bowel, or Ogilvie’s syndrome.
• A hole or rupture (perforation) in your stomach, intestines, or esophagus.
• Recent intestinal or stomach surgery.
• Kidney or liver problems.
• A disruption to your blood-brain barrier.

• Any stomach or intestinal blockage.
• Take certain prescription medications (such as clarithromycin, itraconazole, and ketoconazole) that may interact with Movantik (naloxegol).

Approximately 6 to 12 hours after ingesting 25 mg of Movantik (naloxegol), some participants in clinical trials experienced a bowel movement. However, it took around 24 hours for the majority of persons to have a bowel movement following a dose. It is generally advised to wait three days for this medication to take effect before taking any further laxatives.

When Movantik is taken with other prescription drugs, over-the-counter medications, vitamins, and supplements, it may change how they work or increase the frequency or severity of side effects. Make sure that you tell your healthcare professional about anything that you are taking to avoid any negative drug interactions, including:

• Imatinib.
• Isoniazid.
• Nefazodone.
• Certain antibiotics like clarithromycin, erythromycin, and telithromycin.
• Certain antifungals like itraconazole, ketoconazole, posaconazole, and voriconazole.
• Cardiac drugs, such as quinidine and nicardipine.
• Carbamazepine.
• St. John’s Wort.
• Verapamil.
• Diltiazem.
• Methadone.
• Naloxone.
• Rifampin.
• Grapefruit juice.

Movantik is available in the following dosage form and strengths: 12.5 mg and 25 mg tablets.

25 mg tablet taken orally once a day, at least an hour before or two hours after breakfast, is the usual dose.

If you have kidney issues, are experiencing adverse effects, or are taking a medicine that interacts with Movantik, your doctor may reduce your dosage.

Store Movantik at room temperature and keep it out of reach of children.

There are no generic versions of Movantik available.

You should call your doctor if your symptoms do not improve after 3 days of treatment. Also, after you stop using your pain medication, you should stop taking Movantik.
