Revia

The active ingredient in Revia is naltrexone hydrochloride, which is an opioid antagonist. The mechanism of action involves inhibiting the body's opioid receptors. In doing so, naltrexone inhibits the rewarding effects of drinking alcohol or taking opioids. This can assist in reducing cravings for alcohol or narcotics.

Follow all directions given to you by your doctor and read all documents provided, including the full Prescribing Information, FDA-Approved Product Labeling, Instructions for Use, and Medication Guide before using Revia. However, the following is a synopsis of the general guidelines for the use of Revia:

• Your doctor may advise you to have a family member or other carer monitor your Revia intake regularly to ensure you are taking the medication correctly as part of your therapy.
• After using Revia, your body may become more sensitive to opioids. If you continue to use them, you might respond to lower doses of opioids than before. Using the same dose you used before may result in an overdose or death.
• Wear a medical alert tag or carry an ID card to notify others that you use Revia.
• Revia is merely one component of a comprehensive therapy plan that may involve additional forms of counseling and/or monitoring. Follow your doctor's instructions carefully.-

The most common side effects of Revia include:

• Headache.
• Dizziness.
• Nausea or vomiting.
• Nervousness or anxiety.
• Muscle aches.-

Tiredness.

• Trouble sleeping.
• Stomach pain and cramps.
• Muscle pain or joint pain.
• Constipation.
• Loss of appetite.
• Sexual problems.
• Skin rash.

Some individuals may experience serious side effects while using Revia. These side effects may require immediate medical attention. If you experience any of the following, contact your healthcare provider or seek emergency medical help:

• Suicidal ideation or behaviors.
• Liver damage or hepatitis: dark urine, extreme fatigue, sudden nausea and vomiting, stomach pain on the upper right side, clay-colored feces, and yellowing of the skin or whites of the eyes.
• Symptoms of opiate withdrawal: anxiety, suicidal ideation, restlessness, runny nose, yawning, sweating, chills, wide pupils, and irritability.
• Allergic reaction to the medication.

These are not all of the possible side effects of Revia. You should always seek medical advice from your healthcare provider for any questions or concerns about your medical condition or treatment. Read all patient information, medication guides, or drug information sheets that come with this medication. Before starting Revia, it is crucial to discuss any existing health conditions with your healthcare provider. You should be sure that your healthcare provider is aware of all your medical conditions, including if you have:

• You should not be treated with Revia if you are presently using an opioid analgesic, had an opioid overdose, are experiencing opioid withdrawal symptoms, or if you have taken any opioid medication within the last 7 to 14 days, such as methadone, buprenorphine, hydrocodone, oxycodone, codeine, tramadol, or other opioids.
• If you failed the naloxone challenge test or tested positive for opioids in your urine, you should avoid using Revia.
• Tell your doctor if you're taking thioridazine or disulfiram.
• Also, let your doctor know if you have or have ever had kidney or liver disease.
• Are there any contraindications with Revia?

If you have any of the following conditions or if any of the following apply to you, please notify your healthcare professional since naltrexone (ReVia) is not safe for you to consume.

• Taking opioids for pain, or are still dependent and taking maintenance opioids (e.g., methadone, buprenorphine)
• Actively experiencing opioid withdrawal.
• Failed a naloxone challenge test.

If you have any of the following conditions or if any of the following apply to you, please notify your healthcare professional since naltrexone (ReVia) is not safe for you to consume.

• Taking opioids for pain, or are still dependent and taking maintenance opioids (e.g., methadone, buprenorphine)
• Actively experiencing opioid withdrawal.
• Failed a naloxone challenge test.

Revia begins to work the day you take it, whether in the oral or injectable form (Vivitrol). Within an hour or two, you will notice results, including a decrease in narcotic or alcohol cravings.

If you take naltrexone with other prescription drugs, over-the-counter medications, vitamins, and supplements, it may change how they work or increase the frequency or severity of side effects. Make sure that you tell your healthcare professional about anything that you are taking to avoid any negative drug interactions, including

• Do not use opioids, heroin, or other illicit narcotics while taking Revia. Never try to counteract the effects of naltrexone treatment by taking more opioids. Doing so could have serious consequences, including coma or death.
• Consult your healthcare provider before using any medications to treat a cold, cough, diarrhea, or pain. These medications may contain opioids and may be less effective while taking ReVia.

The typical dose of naltrexone (Revia) for alcohol use disorder is 50 mg taken orally once daily for up to three months.

Opioid use disorder: The typical starting dose is 25 mg taken orally once daily. If you do not suffer withdrawal symptoms, your healthcare team will increase the dose to 50 mg by mouth once daily.

If you miss a dose, take the missed dose as soon as possible, but omit it if it's almost time for the following dose. Do not take two doses at the same time.

Store Revia at room temperature and keep out of reach of children.

There are several generic versions of Revia available.

Stopping Revia does not result in a withdrawal symptom, and tapering the medication is unnecessary. Providers should advise patients that they should not take opioid prescriptions for at least three days and that they may be more susceptible to the effects of opioid drugs.

It is not known whether Revia is safe to use while pregnant. Talk to your doctor if you are already pregnant or if you have any plans to become pregnant. They will know or recommend what is best for you.

Limited data has shown that very small amounts of Revia are found in breast milk. Talk to your doctor if you are already breastfeeding or if you have any plans to breastfeed. They will know or recommend what is best for you.
