Important information about Pulmozyme

The active ingredient in Pulmozyme is dornase alfa. Pulmozyme is a recombinant DNase enzyme in the drug class known as mucolytic medications. It works to improve pulmonary function by breaking down DNA in the pulmonary secretions of people with cystic fibrosis. It will make mucus looser and easier to cough up, so you breathe better and it reduces the risk of respiratory tract infections requiring injectable antibiotics.

Follow all directions given to you by your doctor and read all documents provided, including the full Prescribing Information, FDA-Approved Product Labeling, Instructions for Use, and Medication Guide before using Pulmozyme. However, the following is a synopsis of the general guidelines for the use of Pulmozyme:

  • You will most likely inhale Pulmozyme through your mouth with a nebulizer. There are, however, different nebulizers, so follow directions given to you by your healthcare provider
  • Do not mix medications or liquids in the nebulizer
  • On certain nebulizer systems, you will have to clean it after every use, on others, you may need to change the handset after 90 uses. Ensure you speak to your healthcare provider to make sure you are cleaning your system correctly

Check for leaks by squeezing each ampule before using it. It is best to use a bronchodilator first if you’re taking one congruently

  • If you happen to miss a dose, take the missed dose immediately. Do this unless it is closer to the time of your next dose, in which case skip this dose and take your next dose at the normal time

The most common side effects of Pulmozyme seen in clinical trials as compared to placebo include:

  • Voice changes
  • Conjunctivitis (pink eye)
  • Sore throat
  • Chest pain
  • Rhinitis (common cold)
  • Rash
  • Decrease in FVC of ≥10%
  • Fever
  • Trouble breathing

Some individuals may experience serious side effects while using Pulmozyme. These side effects may require immediate medical attention. If you experience any of the following, contact your healthcare provider or seek emergency medical help:

  • Allergic reaction

These are not all of the possible side effects of Pulmozyme. You should always seek medical advice from your healthcare provider for any questions or concerns about your medical condition or treatment. Read all patient information, medication guides, or drug information sheets that come with this medication. You can also report adverse effects to the Food and Drug Administration at www.fda.gov/medwatch or 1-800-FDA-1088.

Before starting Pulmozyme, it is crucial to discuss any existing health conditions with your healthcare provider. You should be sure that your healthcare provider is aware of all your medical conditions, including if you have:

  • An allergy or have had an allergic reaction to any of the ingredients in Pulmozyme.
  • This includes an allergy to Chinese hamster ovary
  • A pregnancy, plan to become pregnant or are breastfeeding
  • It is unknown whether Pulmozyme passes into breast milk.

Pulmozyme (dornase alfa) is contraindicated in the following situations:

  • Hypersensitivity to dornase alfa or any of its components

Pulmozyme (dornase alfa) typically begins to work within a few days to a week after starting treatment, helping to thin and clear mucus in the lungs. However, the full benefits may take several weeks to become noticeable. Regular use as prescribed is important for maintaining its effectiveness. Always follow your doctor’s instructions for the best results.

When Pulmozyme is taken with other prescription drugs, over-the-counter medications, vitamins, and supplements, it may change how they work or increase the frequency or severity of side effects. There are no clinically significant drug interactions with Pulmozyme; however make sure you tell your doctor about any prescription drugs, over-the-counter medications, vitamins, and supplements that you take.

Pulmozyme comes as a 2.5 mg/2.5 mL clear, colorless inhalation solution in single-dose ampules. It should be used in a nebulizer mouthpiece or a suitable face mask (for pediatric patients) and a compressor. Hudson T Updraft II, Sidestream, and Pari LC are recommended nebulizers, and Pulmo-Aide is often a recommended compressor. Refer to the prescribing information for other recommended jet nebulizers and compressors.

Each mL of aqueous solution contains 1 mg of dornase alfa, calcium chloride dihydrate (0.15 mg), and sodium chloride (8.77 mg).

Some CF patients may benefit from twice-daily administration, while others will only need one.

Refrigerate Pulmozyme in their foil pouch until you use it. It can stay at room temperature for up to 24 hours. Do not use after the expiration date.

Pulmozyme is manufactured by Genentech, Inc.

Currently, there is no generic available for Pulmozyme in the United States.

To stop taking Pulmozyme (dornase alfa), consult your doctor first. They can guide you on the appropriate process, as stopping abruptly may lead to a worsening of symptoms. If you have been using it for long-term management, your doctor may recommend an alternative treatment or adjust your dosage gradually. Always follow your healthcare provider’s advice.

Talk to your doctor if you are already pregnant or if you have any plans to become pregnant. They will know or recommend what is best for you.

Talk to your doctor if you are already breastfeeding or if you have any plans to breastfeed. They will know or recommend what is best for you. It is not known if Pulmozyme is found in breast milk.
