Skelaxin

(Metaxalone)

The active ingredient in Skelaxin is metaxalone, which is a muscle relaxer. The mechanism of action is not fully understood, and it does not directly work on your muscles. However, it is believed that metaxalone reduces pain by general central nervous system depression.

However, the following is a synopsis of the general guidelines for the use of Skelaxin:

• Skelaxin is typically taken by mouth 3 to 4 times daily. You can take it with or without food.
• Skelaxin is simply one component of a comprehensive treatment plan, which may also involve rest, physical therapy, and other pain reduction methods. Follow your doctor's directions.

The most common side effects of Skelaxin include:

• Dizziness.
• Drowsiness.
• Nausea and vomiting.
• Yellowing of the skin or white of the eyes (jaundice).
• Upset stomach.

Some individuals may experience serious side effects while using Skelaxin. These side effects may require immediate medical attention. If you experience any of the following, contact your healthcare provider or seek emergency medical help:

• Allergic reactions include hives, difficulty breathing, and swelling of the lips, tongue, or neck.
• Serotonin syndrome, which can be life-threatening. Symptoms include agitation, perspiration, fever, rapid heartbeat, nausea, vomiting, shakiness, tight muscles, and bewilderment.

Before starting Skelaxin, it is crucial to discuss any existing health conditions with your healthcare provider. You should be sure that your healthcare provider is aware of all your medical conditions, including:

• Drug-induced hemolytic anemia (low red blood cells).
• Severe kidney or liver disease.

• Severe kidney or liver problems.
• History of anemia.

This varies from person to person. Most people see some effects within an hour of using metaxalone. You should experience the full effects within a few hours of taking your dose.

When Skelaxin is taken with other prescription drugs, over-the-counter medications, vitamins, and supplements, it may change how they work or increase the frequency or severity of side effects. Make sure that you tell your healthcare professional about anything that you are taking to avoid any negative drug interactions, including:

Other medications that cause drowsiness such as opioids (codeine, tramadol, and hydrocodone), antidepressants, alcohol, marijuana, drugs for sleep or anxiety (lorazepam, alprazolam, and zolpidem), other muscle relaxants (carisoprodol and cyclobenzaprine), or antihistamines (cetirizine and diphenhydramine).

Skelaxin is available in the following dosage form and strength: 400 mg and 800 mg metaxalone tablets.

Adults and children 13 years or older: The recommended dose is 800 mg taken orally three to four times per day.

If you miss a dose, take your missed dose as soon as you recall. However, if your next planned dose is almost due, skip the missed dose. Do not take extra medication to make up for the missing dose.

Store at room temperature and keep out of reach of children.

You should not stop taking Skelaxin abruptly. It will typically require a gradual reduction in your dose to avoid severe withdrawal symptoms.
