Important information about Teveten
The active ingredient in Teveten is eprosartan mesylate. Teveten belongs to a drug class called angiotensin II receptor blockers (ARBs), also known as angiotensin II receptor antagonists. Angiotensin II causes blood vessels to narrow, which can increase blood pressure. The effects of eprosartan help relax blood vessels, making it easier for blood to flow and lowering blood pressure.
Follow all directions given to you by your doctor and read all documents provided, including the full Prescribing Information, FDA-Approved Product Labeling, Instructions for Use, and Medication Guide before using Teveten. However, the following is a synopsis of the general guidelines for the use of Teveten:
- Take Teveten exactly as prescribed by your health care professional.
- Teveten is taken by mouth and may be taken with or without food.
- If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and take the next dose at the regular time. Do not double doses.
- Continue taking Teveten even if you feel well, since high blood pressure may not cause symptoms.
- Your healthcare provider may monitor your blood pressure, kidney function, and glucose levels during treatment.
- Teveten may cause dizziness, especially after starting treatment or increasing the dose. Use caution when standing up quickly.
Some mild or common side effects of Teveten seen in clinical trials as compared to placebo include:
- Headache.
- Dizziness.
- Upper respiratory tract infection.
- Rhinitis.
Some individuals may experience serious side effects while using Teveten. These side effects may require immediate medical attention. If you experience any of the following, contact your healthcare provider or seek emergency medical help:
- Low blood pressure - symptoms may include fainting, severe dizziness, or lightheadedness.
- Kidney problems - symptoms may include changes in urination, swelling, or worsening kidney disease.
- High potassium levels - symptoms may include muscle weakness, irregular heartbeat, or confusion.
- Severe allergic reactions - symptoms may include swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat, or trouble breathing.
These are not all of the possible side effects of Teveten. You should always seek medical advice from your healthcare provider for any questions or concerns about your medical condition or treatment. Read all patient information, medication guides, or drug information sheets that come with this medication. You can also report adverse effects to the Food and Drug Administration at www.fda.gov/medwatch or 1-800-FDA-1088.
Before starting Teveten, it is crucial to discuss any existing health conditions with your healthcare provider. You should be sure that your healthcare provider is aware of all your medical conditions, including:
- Heart failure.
- Kidney disease.
- Renal artery stenosis.
- Diabetes.
- Elderly.
- Volume-depleted.
- Breastfeeding.
- Liver disease.
- Patients taking Teveten with aliskiren have an increased risk of kidney problems, low blood pressure, and high potassium levels, especially in patients with diabetes.
- Pregnancy.
- Allergy or hypersensitivity to eprosartan.
- Do not use Teveten together with aliskiren in patients with diabetes.
Teveten begins lowering blood pressure within hours after a dose, but the full antihypertensive effect may take 2 to 3 weeks of regular treatment.
When Teveten is taken with other prescription drugs, over-the-counter medications, vitamins, and supplements, it may change how they work or increase the frequency or severity of side effects. Make sure that you tell your healthcare professional about anything that you are taking to avoid any negative drug interactions, including:
- Aliskiren may increase the risk of kidney problems, low blood pressure, and high potassium levels.
- ACE inhibitors such as lisinopril, ramipril, enalapril, captopril, quinapril, perindopril, fosinopril, benazepril, moexipril, and trandolapril may increase the risk of kidney problems and elevated potassium.
- NSAIDs such as ibuprofen, naproxen, and indomethacin may reduce the antihypertensive effects of eprosartan and increase the risk of kidney problems.
- Diuretics such as hydrochlorothiazide or spironolactone may increase the risk of low blood pressure or high potassium levels.
- Trimethoprim may increase potassium levels when combined with ARBs.
- Lithium, due to the risk of lithium toxicity.
Teveten is available as tablets containing 400 mg or 600 mg of eprosartan mesylate.
It should be stored at room temperature, out of the reach of children and pets.
Teveten is manufactured by AbbVie Inc.
Yes, it is available from many manufacturers of generic drugs.
Barring any of the above serious side effects, do not stop taking Teveten without talking to your healthcare provider first. Stopping antihypertensive treatment suddenly may cause your high blood pressure to worsen.
Teveten should not be used during pregnancy because medications that affect the renin-angiotensin system can cause injury or death to the unborn baby.
It is not known whether eprosartan passes into human breast milk. Because of the potential for serious adverse reactions in nursing infants, a decision should be made whether to discontinue breastfeeding or the medication.
Talk to your doctor if you are already breastfeeding or if you have any plans to breastfeed. They will know or recommend what is best for you.
