What is Xofluza?
Xofluza (baloxavir marboxil) is an antiviral medicine. It is used for the treatment of acute uncomplicated influenza in those who are otherwise healthy or at high risk of developing influenza-related complications. It is also given as post-exposure prophylaxis if you have come in contact with someone who has the flu. It is a single dose that you take within 48 hours after the onset of flu symptoms or contact with someone who has the flu. Xofluza is approved to treat influenza A and influenza B. It does not treat or prevent bacterial infections or the common cold.
Xofluza is available as tablets and a liquid for people aged 5 and up. Common side effects in adults and adolescents include sinusitis, diarrhea, and nausea. There is presently no generic version of this drug available.

Important information about Xofluza
The active ingredient in Xofluza is baloxavir marboxil. Because it is an antiviral medicine and an influenza virus polymerase acidic (PA) endonuclease inhibitor, the mechanism of action works by preventing the influenza virus from replicating itself. This helps to prevent the illness from spreading in your body. Xofluza must be taken within 48 hours of the onset of influenza symptoms or following contact with someone with the flu.
Xofluza and oseltamivir (Tamiflu) are both antivirals that help treat and prevent the flu. But they work in different ways. Tamiflu is approved for children in a younger age group than Xofluza.
Follow all directions given to you by your doctor and read all documents provided, including the full Prescribing Information, FDA-Approved Product Labeling, Instructions for Use, and Medication Guide, before using Xofluza. However, the following is a synopsis of the general guidelines for the use of Xofluza:
- Xofluza dosages are weight-based. Follow all dosing instructions carefully, and do not share this medication with anyone.
- Xofluza should be started when you first experience flu symptoms. This medication may be ineffective if you have been ill for more than 48 hours.
- If you're using Xofluza to avoid flu symptoms, take your dose as soon as possible after coming into contact with someone who has the flu.
- You can take Xofluza with or without food.
- This medicine should not be used with dairy products like milk or yoghurt, or with calcium-fortified juice.
- Also, do not take Xofluza with a laxative, antacid, or vitamin/mineral supplement containing aluminium, calcium, magnesium, iron, selenium, or zinc.
The most common side effects of Xofluza seen in clinical trials as compared to placebo include:
- Diarrhea.
- Headaches.
- Bronchitis.
- Sinusitis or swelling of the sinuses.
- Vomiting (children 5 to 11 years old)
Some individuals may experience serious side effects while using Xofluza. These side effects may require immediate medical attention. If you experience any of the following, contact your healthcare provider or seek emergency medical help:
- Severe allergic reaction including hives, troubled breathing, and swelling of the lips, throat, tongue, and face.
These are not all of the possible side effects of Xofluza. You should always seek medical advice from a healthcare professional for any questions or concerns about your medical condition or treatment. Read all patient information, medication guides, or drug information sheets that come with this medication. You can also report adverse effects to the Food and Drug Administration at www.fda.gov/medwatch or 1-800-FDA-1088.
Before starting Xofluza, it is crucial to discuss any existing health conditions with your healthcare provider. You should be sure that your healthcare provider is aware of all your medical conditions, including whether you have:
- An allergy to baloxavir marboxil. This medication may induce severe allergic responses, such as anaphylaxis, angioedema, or certain skin problems, which can be fatal and necessitate prompt medical attention.
- Recently received a flu vaccine. Do not use this medicine if you have received the nasal flu vaccine (live attenuated influenza vaccine).
There are no contraindications with Xofluza.
Xofluza is absorbed by your body and begins functioning to combat the flu within 4 hours. In studies, most adults and teenagers experienced no or moderate flu symptoms within 1 to 2 days of using Xofluza. Children, 5 to 11 years of age, had a longer time to recover from flu symptoms, roughly 5 days after taking the drug. Xofluza (baloxavir marboxil) works best when taken within 48 hours of developing flu symptoms or being exposed to someone who has the flu.
When Xofluza is taken with other prescription drugs, over-the-counter medications, vitamins, and supplements, it may cause drug interactions and change how they work or increase the frequency or severity of side effects. There are no specific medications that interact with Xofluza, but make sure to speak to your healthcare provider about any other medications you use to avoid adverse reactions.
The dosage is based on your body weight. Xofluza is typically administered as a single dose to be consumed at one time. This medication will be administered in 3 dosage forms: tablets, oral suspension, and granules that are dissolved into water.
If you weigh 176 pounds (80 kg) or more, the normal dose of Xofluza is 80 mg by mouth, once only.
If you weigh 44 to 175 pounds (20 to 79.9 kg), the normal single oral dose is 40 mg by mouth, once only.
And if you weigh less than 44 pounds (20 kg), the normal dose is 2 mg/kg by oral once only. Use just the liquid version of the drug.
Store at room temperature and keep out of reach of children.
Genentech is the company that manufactures Xofluza.
There are no generic versions of Xofluza available.
There is no specific way to stop taking Xofluza. However, it is best to speak to your doctor before abruptly stopping the medication.
Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or intend to get pregnant. Influenza during pregnancy can lead to serious consequences for both mother and baby. The benefits of treating influenza may exceed the hazards to the newborn.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommend that pregnant women obtain a flu vaccination at any stage of their pregnancy to protect themselves and their newborns from the virus.
Talk to your doctor if you are already breastfeeding or if you have any plans to breastfeed. They will know or recommend what is best for you.
