When does Eliquis go generic?

The FDA approved the first generic versions of Eliquis (apixaban) at the end of 2019. Manufacturers Micro Labs Limited and Mylan Pharmaceuticals received approval, but patent challenges by Pfizer and Bristol‑Myers Squibb delayed launch. As of the Federal Circuit ruling, generic apixaban cannot appear on pharmacy shelves before April 1, 2028.
What does Eliquis treat?
Eliquis is an oral anticoagulant approved to:
- Reduce risk of stroke and systemic embolism in nonvalvular atrial fibrillation
- Treat and prevent deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE)
- Prevent DVT after hip or knee replacement surgery
Unlike warfarin, it does not require routine blood monitoring or dietary restrictions.
How does Eliquis work?
The active ingredient, apixaban, is a direct Factor Xa inhibitor. By blocking this key clotting enzyme, it reduces formation of dangerous clots in the heart, legs, or lungs.
Common side effects
- Nosebleeds or bleeding gums
- Easy bruising
- Anemia (low red blood cell count)
- Nausea
Serious side effects
- Major bleeding (coughing or vomiting blood, black/tarry stools)
- Allergic reactions (hives, facial or tongue swelling, breathing difficulty)
Seek immediate medical attention for any severe bleeding or allergic symptoms.
Cost considerations
Out‑of‑pocket cost varies by insurance and pharmacy. Without coverage, monthly cost can exceed $600. Commercial insurance typically brings that down to around $38 per month; Medicare beneficiaries average about $55 monthly. Generic apixaban (when available) may offer substantial savings.
International mail‑order options such as Universal Drug Store can provide lower‑cost alternatives with free delivery on orders over $100.
