Important information about Caduet
The active ingredients in Caduet are amlodipine besylate, a calcium channel blocker, and atorvastatin calcium, a HMG CoA reductase inhibitor or statin.
Amlodipine is an antihypertensive that works by relaxing blood vessels so blood can flow more easily. This lowers blood pressure and helps prevent chest pain related to angina.
Atorvastatin works by blocking an enzyme called HMG-CoA reductase. This enzyme helps the body make cholesterol. By blocking it, atorvastatin lowers LDL (bad cholesterol) and triglycerides and can increase HDL (good cholesterol). Lowering cholesterol reduces plaque buildup in blood vessels.
Together, this combination lowers the risk of stroke, heart attack, and other heart complications in people with type 2 diabetes, coronary heart disease, or other risk factors.
Follow all directions given to you by your doctor and read all documents provided, including the full Prescribing Information, FDA-Approved Product Labeling, Instructions for Use, and Medication Guide before using Caduet. However, the following is a synopsis of the general guidelines for the use of Caduet:
- Take Caduet exactly as prescribed by your healthcare provider.
- Take it once daily.
- It may be taken with or without food.
- Swallow the tablet whole.
- Avoid large amounts of grapefruit juice, as it may increase atorvastatin levels.
- Your dose may be titrated based on your blood pressure and cholesterol response.
- Continue following a heart-healthy diet and exercise plan as advised.
- If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember, unless it is almost time for your next dose. Do not double your dose to make up for a missed dose.
- Regular blood tests may be needed to check cholesterol levels and liver function.
Some mild or common side effects of Caduet seen in clinical trials include:
- Swelling (edema), especially in the ankles or feet.
- Dizziness.
- Muscle pain.
- Joint pain.
- Headache.
- Urinary tract infection.
- Upset stomach.
- Common cold symptoms.
Some individuals may experience serious side effects while using Caduet. These side effects may require immediate medical attention. If you experience any of the following, contact your healthcare provider or seek emergency medical help:
- Unexplained muscle pain, weakness, or tenderness, especially with fever or dark urine, may indicate myopathy or rhabdomyolysis.
- Yellowing of the skin or eyes (jaundice), stomach pain, and loss of appetite, which may signal liver problems.
- Severe allergic reaction, including skin rash, swelling, or trouble breathing.
- Very low blood pressure causing fainting or severe dizziness.
- Sudden chest pain after starting or increasing the dose of Caduet, which could be a sign of a heart attack.
These are not all of the possible side effects of Caduet. You should always seek medical advice from your healthcare provider for any questions or concerns about your medical condition or treatment. Read all patient information, medication guides, or drug information sheets that come with this medication. You can also report adverse effects to the Food and Drug Administration at www.fda.gov/medwatch or 1-800-FDA-1088.
Before starting Caduet, it is crucial to discuss any existing health conditions with your healthcare provider. You should be sure that your healthcare provider is aware of all your medical conditions, including:
- Liver disease or liver problems.
- Kidney problems.
- Heart failure.
- Coronary artery disease.
- Thyroid disorders.
- A history of muscle problems related to statins.
- High triglycerides.
- If you drink large amounts of alcohol.
- If you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
- Immune system disorder.
Caduet is contraindicated in patients with:
Active liver disease.
Known hypersensitivity to amlodipine, atorvastatin, or any component of the product.
Pregnancy.
Blood pressure improvement from amlodipine may begin within the first week. Cholesterol lowering from atorvastatin can be seen within about 2 weeks, with maximum effect in about 4 weeks. Ongoing use is needed to maintain benefits.
When Caduet is taken with other prescription drugs, over-the-counter medications, vitamins, and supplements, it may change how they work or increase the frequency or severity of side effects. Make sure that you tell your healthcare professional about anything that you are taking to avoid any negative drug interactions, including:
- Cyclosporine, which may increase atorvastatin levels and muscle risk.
- Gemfibrozil or other fibrates, such as fenofibrate, increase the risk of muscle problems.
- Niacin, which may increase the risk of myopathy.
- Colchicine, which may increase the risk of muscle toxicity.
- Digoxin, which may require monitoring.
- Clarithromycin, erythromycin, ketoconazole, itraconazole, posaconazole, or voriconazole may increase atorvastatin levels.
- Ritonavir, darunavir, nelfinavir, fosamprenavir, tipranavir, or other protease inhibitors, which may increase statin levels.
- Letermovir, which may affect atorvastatin metabolism.
- Tacrolimus, which may increase statin levels.
- Certain hepatitis C medications, such as glecaprevir/pibrentasvir or elbasvir/grazoprevir, may increase statin exposure.
- Other statins, such as simvastatin, may increase the risk of muscle injury.
Caduet is available in multiple tablet strengths combining different doses of amlodipine and atorvastatin.
Common combinations include varying doses of amlodipine (for example, 2.5 mg, 5 mg, or 10 mg) with atorvastatin (such as 10 mg, 20 mg, 40 mg, or 80 mg).
Your healthcare provider will select the appropriate starting dose and may adjust it based on your response.
It should be stored at room temperature, away from the reach of children or pets.
Caduet is manufactured by Pfizer.
Yes, generic amlodipine/atorvastatin tablets are available.
Do not stop taking Caduet without medical advice. Stopping suddenly may cause your blood pressure or cholesterol to rise. Your healthcare provider can help you adjust or change therapy safely.
Caduet should not be used during pregnancy because atorvastatin may harm an unborn baby. Use effective birth control to prevent pregnancy while you are using this medicine. If you become pregnant, stop taking it and contact your healthcare provider immediately.
Talk to your doctor if you are breastfeeding or planning to breastfeed. Atorvastatin may pass into breast milk, and breastfeeding is not recommended while taking this medication.
