Important information about Cimzia

The active ingredient in Cimzia is certolizumab pegol, which is a biologic disease-modifying antirheumatic medication (DMARD). Specifically, it belongs to the drug class called tumor necrosis factor (TNF) blockers. The body produces a protein called TNFα (tumor necrosis factor alpha), which is essential for inflammation. Cimzia reduces inflammation in your body by blocking TNFα, which helps to alleviate autoimmune disease symptoms.

Follow all directions given to you by your doctor and read all documents provided, including the full Prescribing Information, FDA-Approved Product Labeling, Instructions for Use, and Medication Guide, before using Cimzia. However, the following is a synopsis of the general guidelines for the use of Cimzia:

  • Cimzia is administered subcutaneously. You should receive instructions from a healthcare professional on how to take the drug correctly on your own.
  • Typically, Cimzia is administered every two to four weeks. To receive a complete dose, you might need to provide multiple injections. Pay close attention to your doctor's dosage recommendations.
  • Only get your injection ready when it's time to administer it. If the medication is hazy, has changed color, or contains particles, do not use it. For new medications, give your pharmacist a call.
  • Before injecting your dose, remove the syringe from the refrigerator and let it come to room temperature.
  • Every Cimzia prefilled syringe is only meant to be used once. Even if there is still medication inside, discard after one use.
  • After using a needle and syringe just once, put them in a "sharps" container that can't be punctured. Observe local or state regulations while disposing of this container. Keep it out of children's and pets' reach.
  • The use of Cimzia may activate or worsen hepatitis B virus if you have ever had it. While taking this medication and for a few months after stopping it, you might require regular liver function tests.
  • Cimzia is an immunosuppressant and could raise your risk of infections.

The most common side effects of Cimzia seen in clinical trials as compared to placebo include:

  • Urinary tract infections.
  • Headaches.
  • Pain, swelling, or redness at the injection site.
  • Cough.
  • Fever.
  • Joint pain.
  • Skin rash.
  • Upper respiratory infections.
  • Herpes infection.
  • Hives.

Some individuals may experience serious side effects while using Cimzia. These side effects may require immediate medical attention. If you experience any of the following, contact your healthcare provider or seek emergency medical help:

  • Serious infections include fever, dyspnea, coughing, weakness, chills, sweating, diarrhea, stomach discomfort, burning when urinating, and increased frequency of urination.
  • Shortness of breath, edema in the legs, ankles, or feet, an irregular heartbeat, fatigue, and weakness are all signs of heart failure.
  • Loss of appetite, exhaustion, skin lumps, enlarged lymph nodes in the neck, armpits, or groin, weight loss, and nosebleeds are all possible indicators of malignancies (cancer).
  • Hives, itching, facial or tongue swelling, and trouble breathing are examples of allergic reactions.

These are not all of the possible side effects of Cimzia. You should always seek medical advice from your healthcare provider for any questions or concerns about your medical condition or treatment. Read all patient information, medication guides, or drug information sheets that come with this medication. You can also report adverse effects to the Food and Drug Administration at www.fda.gov/medwatch or 1-800-FDA-1088.

Before starting Cimzia, it is crucial to discuss any existing health conditions with your healthcare provider. You should be sure that your healthcare provider is aware of all your medical conditions, including if you have:

  • An ongoing bacterial or fungal infection.
  • Hepatitis B.
  • Lymphoma or other cancers, like skin cancer.
  • A disease of the blood cells.
  • Congestive heart failure.
  • Seizures.
  • An allergy to natural rubber.
  • Any numbness or tingling, or a disease that affects your nervous system, such as multiple sclerosis or Guillain-Barre syndrome.
  • Recently received or have any upcoming live vaccinations.
  • A certolizumab allergy.
  • Ulcerative colitis or Crohn's disease.

Patients who have previously experienced a hypersensitivity reaction to certolizumab pegol or any of the excipients should not take Cimzia. Serum sickness, urticaria, angioedema, and anaphylaxis have all been reactions.

Within one week of starting Cimzia (certolizumab) treatment, several patients in clinical studies began to experience a reduction in their symptoms. Participants in these studies were those using Cimzia for psoriatic arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, and rheumatoid arthritis. Remember that each person may experience a different amount of time before they feel or see symptom improvement with the medicine.

When Cimzia is taken with other prescription drugs, over-the-counter medications, vitamins, and supplements, it may change how they work or increase the frequency or severity of side effects. Make sure that you tell your healthcare professional about anything that you are taking to avoid any negative drug interactions, including:

  • Abatacept.
  • Adalimumab.
  • Anakinra.
  • Azathioprine.
  • Etanercept.
  • Golimumab.
  • Infliximab.
  • Natalizumab.
  • Mercaptopurine.
  • Rituximab.

Crohn's disease: The usual dosage is 400 mg administered subcutaneously every two weeks for 3 doses. You will transition to a maintenance dose of 400 mg every four weeks if Cimzia is effective for you following those initial doses.

Non-radiographic axial spondyloarthritis, psoriatic arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, and rheumatoid arthritis: The usual dosage is 400 mg administered subcutaneously every two weeks for 3 doses. A maintenance dose of 200 mg every two weeks or 400 mg every four weeks will then be used.

Every two weeks, 400 mg is usually injected beneath the skin to treat plaque psoriasis. Your doctor may suggest a different dosage plan if you weigh less than 198 lbs.

Keep Cimzia refrigerated in its original container. Avoid freezing and shield from light.

Prefilled syringes that have not been opened can also be kept at room temperature for up to seven days, out of direct sunlight and heat. Any prefilled syringe that is not used within seven days should be thrown away. Never return it to the refrigerator.

Cimzia is made by UCB, Inc.

There are no generic versions of Cimzia available.

You risk getting worse if you stop taking certolizumab or miss doses. Continue your treatment until your healthcare provider instructs you to stop or you have serious side effects.

There is not enough data to know if this medication is safe to take while pregnant. Talk to your doctor if you are already pregnant or if you have any plans to become pregnant. They will know or recommend what is best for you.

Studies have not revealed any significant adverse effects in children whose mothers are using Cimzia, even though trace amounts of the medication can enter breast milk. However, be sure to tell your healthcare provider if you are breastfeeding or plan to breastfeed while taking Cimzia.
