Dyazide

The active ingredients in Dyazide are triamterene and hydrochlorothiazide. Hydrochlorothiazide, a thiazide diuretic (water pill), causes you to urinate more. It acts in your kidneys to eliminate excess water and electrolytes (such as salt and potassium), lowering your blood pressure and reducing edema throughout your body.

Triamterene is a potassium-sparing diuretic (water pill). It also helps your kidneys remove excess water and electrolytes, but it does not remove potassium from your body. This lowers your blood pressure and edema while avoiding a drop in your potassium levels.

Follow all directions given to you by your doctor and read all documents provided, including the full Prescribing Information, FDA-Approved Product Labeling, Instructions for Use, and Medication Guide before using Dyazide. However, the following is a synopsis of the general guidelines for the use of Dyazide:

• Dyazide is typically taken once a day.
• You may require frequent medical tests. Even if you don't have any symptoms, tests can help your doctor decide whether Dyazide is beneficial.
• An electrocardiogram, or ECG (commonly known as an EKG), may also be used to assess your heart function.
• Severe sickness might deplete your potassium levels. If you are experiencing a major illness, accident, or medical emergency, contact your doctor right away.
• If you need surgery or medical tests, tell your doctor you are currently taking this medication. You may need to take a little break.

Some mild and common side effects of Dyazide include:

• Headaches.
• Tiredness.
• Dry mouth.
• Dizziness or lightheadedness.
• Muscle cramps.
• Blurred vision.
• Nausea and vomiting.
• Orthostatic hypotension: low blood pressure when you move from lying/sitting down to standing up.
• Constipation.
• Drowsiness.

Some individuals may experience serious side effects while using Dyazide. These side effects may require immediate medical attention. If you experience any of the following, contact your healthcare provider or seek emergency medical help:

• Serious skin reactions include fever, sore throat, skin soreness, a spreading skin rash, blisters, and peeling skin.
• High potassium levels (hyperkalemia) can cause fast or irregular heartbeat, difficulty breathing, chest pain, nausea, vomiting, muscle weakness, and a tingling sensation.
• High levels of acid in the blood (acidosis) can cause confusion, a fast heartbeat, nausea, headaches, and fatigue.
• Severe allergic reactions may include a severe rash, difficulty breathing, hives, and throat closure.

• Unable to urinate (anuria).
• Are taking amiloride or spironolactone, diuretics that work similarly to triamterene.
• Taking potassium supplements (unless your doctor advises you to).

• Cirrhosis.
• Liver disease.
• Gout.
• Heart disease or heart failure.
• Cataracts or glaucoma.
• Arrhythmias.
• Kidney stones.
• Allergy to penicillins or sulfa drugs.
• Electrolyte imbalances.
• Take salt substitutes.
• Use potassium supplements, salt replacements, or low-sodium milk only if your doctor has prescribed them.
• Avoid a high-salt diet. Too much salt causes your body to retain water, which can reduce Dyazide's effectiveness.
• Hydrochlorothiazide may raise your risk of skin cancer. Avoid the sun and tanning beds. When you are outside, use protective gear and sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher. Your doctor may advise you to have skin exams on a regular basis.

• Cannot urinate.
• Kidney problems.
• High potassium levels.
• Taking with other potassium-raising drugs (e.g., spironolactone, amiloride, potassium supplements).

You will experience a greater need to urinate within a few hours of taking Dyazide (triamterene/hydrochlorothiazide). This can last for 6 to 12 hours, so make sure you have consistent access to a toilet following your medication. However, based on hydrochlorothiazide evidence, you may need to take this drug for several days to weeks before experiencing its full blood pressure-lowering effects.

When Dyazide is taken with other prescription drugs, over-the-counter medications, vitamins, and supplements, it may change how they work or increase the frequency or severity of side effects. Make sure that you tell your healthcare professional about anything that you are taking to avoid any negative drug interactions, including:

• Any other blood pressure medications.
• Amphotericin B.
• Chlorpropamide.
• Digoxin.
• Laxatives.
• Lithium.
• Methenamine.
• A blood thinner.
• Oral diabetic medications.
• Steroid medications (prednisone and others).
• Angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors include benazepril, captopril, enalapril, fosinopril, lisinopril, moexipril, perindopril, quinapril, ramipril, and trandolapril.
• Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) include aspirin, ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin), naproxen (Aleve), celecoxib, diclofenac, indomethacin, meloxicam, and others.

Dyazide is typically used once a day at doses ranging from 37.5 mg/25 mg triamterene/hydrochlorothiazide to 75 mg/50 mg.

If you miss a dose, take the missed dose as soon as possible, but omit it if it's almost time for the next dose. Do not take two doses at the same time.

Store at room temperature and keep out of reach of children.

You should not abruptly stop taking Dyazide without talking to your doctor first. Doing so can cause your blood pressure to rise suddenly or a dangerous increase in fluid retention.
