Midamor
Midamor (amiloride HCl) is a brand-name, potassium-sparing diuretic that, when combined with other drugs used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension) or heart failure, prevents low potassium levels (hypokalemia) in the blood. It is taken orally once a day with food. Headache, nausea, and loss of appetite are among the possible side effects. While a generic version is accessible, the brand-name Midamor is no longer in use.
HCTZ (hydrochlorothiazide) is also used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension) and water retention (edema).

Important information about Midamor
How does Midamor work?
The active ingredient in Midamor is amiloride hydrochloride, which is a potassium-sparing diuretic. It acts in the kidneys to eliminate excess salt and water from the body while maintaining potassium levels. This helps to lower blood pressure and reduce fluid buildup.
Midamor is often used along with thiazide or loop diuretics.
How do you use Midamor?
Follow all directions given to you by your doctor and read all documents provided, including the full Prescribing Information, FDA-Approved Product Labeling, Instructions for Use, and Medication Guide before using Midamor. However, the following is a synopsis of the general guidelines for the use of Midamor:
- Take Midamor with meals.
- Your doctor may advise you to eat particular foods or take supplements to keep your potassium levels from dropping too low. Follow the diet and medication regimen provided by your doctor or nutritionist.
- Midamor requires periodic blood testing. An electrocardiograph (ECG), often known as an EKG, may be used to assess your heart function.
- This medication may have an effect on the outcome of certain medical tests. Tell any doctor who treats you that you are taking Midamor. You may need to discontinue this medication at least three days before undergoing a glucose tolerance test.
- Midamor should not be given to patients receiving other potassium-conserving agents, such as spironolactone or triamterene.
What are the side effects of Midamor?
Some mild and common side effects of amiloride include:
- Headaches.
- Loss of appetite and weight loss.
- Vomiting and nausea.
- Diarrhea.
- Weakness and fatigue.
- Gas or bloating.
- Dizziness.
- Shortness of breath.
- Stomach pain.
- Constipation.
- Muscle cramps.
Some individuals may experience serious side effects while using Midamor. These side effects may require immediate medical attention. If you experience any of the following, contact your healthcare provider or seek emergency medical help:
- Electrolyte changes, including high potassium levels. This can cause nausea, muscle weakness, numbness or tingling, slow or unusual heart rate, or irregular heartbeats.
- Allergic reaction to the medication, such as swelling, skin rash, and hives.
These are not all of the possible side effects of Midamor. You should always seek medical advice from your healthcare provider for any questions or concerns about your medical condition or treatment. Read all patient information, medication guides, or drug information sheets that come with this medication. You can also report adverse effects to the Food and Drug Administration at www.fda.gov/medwatch or 1-800-FDA-1088.
What are the warnings or precautions for Midamor?
Before starting Midamor, it is crucial to discuss any existing health conditions with your healthcare provider. You should be sure that your healthcare provider is aware of all your medical conditions, including:
- Kidney disease.
- Unable to urinate.
- High potassium levels (hyperkalemia).

- Diabetes.
- Cardiovascular disease or congestive heart failure.
- Cirrhosis or other liver disease.

Boxed Warning
Amiloride, like other potassium-conserving medications, can cause hyperkalaemia (serum potassium levels greater than 5.5 mEq/L), which can be fatal if not treated promptly.
Are there any contraindications with Midamor?

How long does it take Midamor to work?
Amiloride can begin to reduce blood pressure within 2 hours of a dose. You may need to take this medicine for many weeks to see more consistent changes in your blood pressure. Check your blood pressure at home as prescribed by your doctor. Record your blood pressure readings and bring them to your appointments. This might help your healthcare team understand how well amiloride is working for you and whether your dosage needs to be adjusted.
