The active ingredient in Eltroxin is levothyroxine sodium. Levothyroxine is a synthetic version of the thyroxine hormone that is naturally produced by the thyroid gland. -Your doctor may ask you to take Eltroxin separately from other medications. Take it at least 4 hours apart from medications that can affect its absorption.

Your doctor may require you to do regular blood work for thyroid function tests. By monitoring your TSH levels, they can adjust your dose of levothyroxine to find a dose that is right for you.

The tablets can be cut and crushed if necessary.

If you miss your daily dose of Eltroxin, take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and take the next dose at your scheduled time.

The most common side effects of Eltroxin seen in clinical trials as compared to placebo include:

-Diarrhea, nausea, abdominal cramps

-Fatigue, headaches

-Restlessness, anxiety

-heat intolerance, sweating

-Changes in your menstrual cycle and difficulty getting pregnant

-Muscle weakness or muscle spasms

-Insomnia

Some individuals may experience serious side effects while using Eltroxin. These side effects may require immediate medical attention. If you experience any of the following, contact your healthcare provider or seek emergency medical help:

-Increased appetite, heart palpitations, fast heart rate, nervousness, diarrhea, heat intolerance, sweating: These can be signs of too much thyroid hormone.

-Chest pains, shortness of breath, or irregular heartbeat: These can be signs of heart failure or a heart attack.

-Skin rash, hives, swelling of the face or lips: This can be a sign of hypersensitivity and a serious allergic reaction.

-Severe weight gain or changes in appetite.

-Headaches with vision problems or ringing in the ears.

Boxed Warning

Eltroxin should not be used for the purpose of weight loss.

Eltroxin is contraindicated in:

-People who have had allergic reactions to levothyroxine or any inactive ingredients of the formulation, including acacia powder, lactose, magnesium stearate, and maize starch.

-People who produce too much thyroid hormone (thyrotoxicosis)

-People who have a history of heart problems, including arrhythmias or a myocardial infarction (heart attack)

-People who have adrenal insufficiency or problems with the adrenal gland

-People who are pregnant and taking medication for hyperthyroidism

It may take weeks to titrate to the dose of levothyroxine that is right for you.

When Eltroxin is taken with other prescription drugs, over-the-counter medications, vitamins, and supplements, it may change how they work or increase the frequency or severity of side effects. Make sure that you tell your healthcare professional about anything that you are taking to avoid any negative drug interactions, including:

-Vitamins and supplements like biotin, calcium, or iron supplements. Taking biotin may falsely elevate your thyroid hormone levels during blood tests. You should stop taking biotin for 2 days prior to a blood test for thyroid hormones.

-Medications to treat stomach issues, like proton pump inhibitors or other antacids.

-Heart medications like digoxin, amiodarone, water pills, warfarin, and beta blockers.

-Cholesterol medications like cholestyramine or colestipol.

-Antidepressants or mental health medications like amitriptyline, SSRIs (like fluoxetine or sertraline), methadone, or lithium.

-Seizure medications like carbamazepine, diazepam, or phenytoin.

-Antidiabetic medications, including insulin.

-Contraceptive medications containing oestrogen, testosterone, and other hormone therapies.

-Antibiotic or antiviral medications.

-Steroids.

-Other medications to treat thyroid problems.

-Any other medications, including imatinib, rifampicin, orlistat, sucralfate, etc.

Eltroxin tablets may contain 25, 50, 75, 88, 100, 112, 125, 137, 150, 175, and 200 mcg of levothyroxine sodium.

Store Eltroxin at room temperature, out of reach of children.
