Important information about Klor-Con

How does Klor-Con work?

The active ingredient in Klor-Con is potassium chloride. Oral potassium chloride is a potassium salt, or supplement, used to raise low blood potassium levels. Potassium is required for a healthy heart, nerve, and muscle function, as well as other key body processes.

How do you use Klor-Con?

Follow all directions given to you by your doctor and read all documents provided, including the full Prescribing Information, FDA-Approved Product Labeling, Instructions for Use, and Medication Guide before using Klor-Con. However, the following is a synopsis of the general guidelines for the use of Klor-Con:

  • If Klor-Con upsets your stomach, take it with food.
  • Swallow potassium tablets or capsules whole with a full glass of water. Do not crush, chew, or suck on them, as this may irritate your mouth and throat.
  • Measure liquid medication accurately using the provided dosing syringe or a proper measuring device—not a kitchen spoon. If taking the oral solution, ensure it is mixed with at least 4 ounces of water before consumption.
  • You may need to follow a specific diet while using Klor-Con. Adhere to the guidance provided by your doctor or nutritionist regarding foods to eat or avoid for optimal management of your condition.
  • If you have trouble swallowing Klor-Con tablets, consult your doctor. They may suggest dissolving the tablet in water or mixing the contents of a capsule with soft food. Follow your doctor's instructions carefully.
  • Regular medical tests may be necessary, including an electrocardiogram (ECG or EKG) to monitor heart function. Even if you do not experience symptoms, these tests can help determine the medication’s effectiveness.
  • Some tablets have a shell that does not fully dissolve in the body, and parts of it may appear in your stool. This is normal and does not impact the medication's effectiveness.

What are the side effects of Klor-Con?

The most common side effects of Klor-Con seen in clinical trials as compared to placebo include:

  • Nausea or vomiting.
  • Stomach pain or discomfort.
  • Excessive gas.
  • Diarrhea.

Some individuals may experience serious side effects while using Klor-Con. These side effects may require immediate medical attention. If you experience any of the following, contact your healthcare provider or seek emergency medical help:

  • Dangerously high potassium levels (severe hyperkalemia): fatigue, muscle weakness, chest pain, irregular heartbeat, and difficulty breathing.
  • Symptoms of stomach or intestinal damage: severe vomiting, stomach pain, bloating, and black or tarry stools.
  • Allergic reactions: skin rash, hives, troubled breathing, or swelling of your face, tongue, or throat.

These are not all of the possible adverse reactions of Klor-Con. You should always seek medical advice from your healthcare provider for any questions or concerns about your medical condition or treatment. Read all patient information, medication guides, or drug information sheets that come with this medication. You can also report adverse effects to the Food and Drug Administration at www.fda.gov/medwatch or 1-800-FDA-1088.

What are the warnings or precautions for Klor-Con?

Before starting Klor-Con, it is crucial to discuss any existing health conditions with your healthcare provider. You should be sure that your healthcare provider is aware of all your medical conditions, including if you have:

  • Heart issues.
  • High blood pressure.
  • Liver or kidney illness.
  • An extensive tissue injury, such as a serious burn.
  • An electrolyte imbalance (for example, low blood calcium or magnesium levels).
  • Stomach bleeding, ulcers, or intestine blockages.
  • Adrenal gland disorder.
  • Diabetes.
  • Severe dehydration.
  • Avoid taking potassium supplements or any products containing potassium unless directed by your doctor. Be mindful that salt substitutes and low-sodium foods often have potassium, so use them with caution.

Are there any contraindications with Klor-Con?

Contraindications are certain health problems or situations in which a person should avoid taking a drug for safety reasons. If you have any of the following conditions or if any of the following apply to you, please notify your healthcare professional since oral potassium chloride is not safe to ingest.

  • Currently taking a potassium-sparing diuretic (water pill) like triamterene (Dyrenium) or amiloride (Midamor).
  • Are allergic to potassium chloride.

How long does it take Klor-Con to work?

Increased urine potassium excretion begins one hour after administering Klor-Con Extended-release Tablets, peaks after four hours, and lasts up to eight hours.

What interacts with Klor-Con?

When Klor-Con is taken with other prescription drugs, over-the-counter medications, vitamins, and supplements, it may change how they work or increase the frequency or severity of side effects. Make sure that you tell your healthcare professional about anything that you are taking to avoid any negative drug interactions, including:

  • Medicine that prevents organ transplant rejection.
  • Potassium-sparing diuretics like spironolactone, triamterene, and amiloride.
  • Angiotensin-converting enzyme or ACE inhibitors like captopril, enalapril, and lisinopril.
  • Angiotensin receptor blockers (ARBs) such as losartan or valsartan.
  • Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as ibuprofen, naproxen, and others.
  • Eplerenone.
  • Digoxin.
  • Quinidine.
  • Bronchodilators.

What doses of Klor-Con are available?

Your provider will determine your oral potassium chloride (measured in milliequivalents, or mEq) based on a variety of criteria, including your blood potassium level and any medical conditions you have.

Oral potassium chloride is available in several dosage forms, including extended-release capsules, extended-release tablets, and oral solutions. Your dose may differ based on the formulation you're provided.

Treatment for low potassium levels.

Adults: The normal total daily dose varies from 40 to 100 mEq, divided into two to five smaller doses and taken orally throughout the day. Take no more than 20 mEq (tablets) or 40 mEq (capsules and oral solutions) in a single dose.
