What is Oxybutynin?

Oxybutynin is a generic medication that reduces bladder and urinary tract muscle spasms, commonly used to treat symptoms of overactive bladder (OAB) such as frequent or urgent urination, incontinence, and increased nighttime urination. It is also prescribed for children aged 5 years and older with overactive bladder (OAB) due to neurologic conditions like spina bifida, with extended-release tablets approved for children aged 6 and above.

Oxybutynin is available as short-acting tablets or solutions taken 2 to 4 times daily and as long-acting tablets (e.g., Ditropan XL) taken once daily.

Important information about Oxybutynin

The active ingredient in Oxybutynin is Oxybutynin Chloride. Oxybutynin is an anticholinergic, antispasmodic, and antimuscarinic drug that helps to relax bladder muscles. Relaxed bladder muscles produce fewer spasms, which reduces your need to urinate.

Follow all directions given to you by your doctor and read all documents provided, including the full Prescribing Information, FDA-Approved Product Labeling, Instructions for Use, and Medication Guide before using Oxybutynin. However, the following is a synopsis of the general guidelines for the use of Oxybutynin:

  • Take the extended-release pills with a full glass of water, at the same time every day.
  • You can take oxybutynin with or without food.
  • Swallow the extended-release tablet whole, without crushing, chewing, or breaking it.
  • You can take oxybutynin with or without food.
  • Use the supplied measuring instrument to measure liquid medicine.
  • Some tablets are manufactured with a shell that does not dissolve or melt in the body. A portion of this shell may emerge in your feces. This is typical and will not reduce the medicine's effectiveness.

The most common side effects of Oxybutynin seen in clinical trials as compared to placebo include:

  • Dry mouth.
  • Dizziness.
  • Constipation.
  • Sleepiness.
  • Nausea.
  • Blurred vision or dry eyes.
  • Difficulty urinating.
  • Headache.
  • Diarrhea.
  • Urinary tract infection (UTI).
  • Heartburn.

Some individuals may experience serious side effects while using Oxybutynin. These side effects may require immediate medical attention. If you experience any of the following, contact your healthcare provider or seek emergency medical help:

  • Angioedema (severe swelling): swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat or hives.

These are not all of the possible side effects of Oxybutynin. You should always seek medical advice from your healthcare provider for any questions or concerns about your medical condition or treatment. Read all patient information, medication guides, or drug information sheets that come with this medication. You can also report adverse effects to the Food and Drug Administration at www.fda.gov/medwatch or 1-800-FDA-1088.

Before starting Oxybutynin, it is crucial to discuss any existing health conditions with your healthcare provider. You should be sure that your healthcare provider is aware of all your medical conditions, including if you have:

  • Do not take oxybutynin if you have untreated or uncontrolled narrow-angle glaucoma, a blockage in your stomach or intestines, or if you are unable to urinate. Additionally, avoid this medication if you have had an allergic reaction to oxybutynin.
  • Before using oxybutynin, inform your doctor if you have glaucoma, liver or kidney disease, an enlarged prostate, myasthenia gravis, ulcerative colitis, a digestive obstruction, or a condition such as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) or slow digestion.
  • Avoid overheating or dehydration while exercising or in hot weather, as oxybutynin reduces sweating, increasing the risk of heat stroke. This medication may also cause blurred vision or impair your ability to think or react, so use caution when driving or performing tasks requiring focus and clear vision.
  • Many medications, including prescription, over-the-counter, vitamin, and herbal products, can interact with oxybutynin. Inform your doctor about all medications you are taking, and consult them before starting any new medication. Keep an updated list of your medications to share with healthcare providers.
  • Stop taking oxybutynin and contact your doctor immediately if you experience serious side effects, such as hot and dry skin, extreme thirst, severe stomach pain or constipation, pain or burning during urination, or if you stop urinating altogether.

Contraindications are certain health problems or situations in which a person should avoid taking a drug for safety reasons. If you have any of the below conditions or if any of the following apply to you, please notify your healthcare professional because Oxybutynin is not safe for you to consume. Some contraindications for Oxybutynin include:

  • Urinary difficulties.
  • Movement issues in the stomach or intestine
  • Uncontrolled narrow-angle glaucoma.

In general, your body absorbs oxybutynin 1 to 6 hours after taking it, depending on whether you take the short-acting or long-acting version. Keep in mind that if you're taking oxybutynin for the first time, it may take a few months until you and your doctor discover an appropriate dose for you.

If Oxybutynin works for you, you might anticipate having less of a need to use the bathroom and less urine leakage throughout the day. Your doctor may advise you to keep a void diary at the start of treatment to monitor how well Oxybutynin is working.

When Oxybutynin is taken with other prescription drugs, over-the-counter medications, vitamins, and supplements, it may change how they work or increase the frequency or severity of side effects. Make sure that you tell your healthcare professional about anything that you are taking to avoid any negative drug interactions.

  • Combining Oxybutynin with other drowsiness-inducing medicines can exacerbate the impact. Consult your doctor before taking an opioid, a sleeping pill, a muscle relaxant, or medication for anxiety or seizures.
  • Inform your healthcare provider about all your other medications, particularly:
  • Antibiotic, anti-fungal, or antiviral medications;
  • Bronchodilator asthma medication
  • Cold or allergy medicine (Benadryl, among others);
  • Medicine to treat hyperactive bladder.
  • Medicine for treating dementia;
  • Medicine to treat Parkinson's disease; or
  • Medicine is used to treat stomach issues, motion sickness, and irritable bowel syndrome.

For extended-release tablets, the typical dosage form for adults is 5 mg to 10 mg taken once daily, with a maximum dose of 30 mg per day. For children aged 6 years and older, the starting dose is 5 mg once daily, with a maximum dose of 20 mg per day.

For immediate-release tablets, oral syrup, or oral solution, adults typically start with 2.5 mg to 5 mg taken 2 to 3 times daily, up to a maximum of 5 mg 4 times daily. Children older than 5 years usually begin with 5 mg twice daily, with a maximum dose of 5 mg 3 times daily.

For a missed dose, take the next dose as soon as possible, but omit it if it's almost time for the following dose. Do not take two doses at the same time.

Keep firmly sealed at room temperature, away from moisture, light, and heat.

Oxybutynin is manufactured by multiple pharmaceutical companies, including Novitium Pharma, which markets oxybutynin chloride tablets in the United States, and Teva Pharmaceuticals, which produces oxybutynin chloride tablets, also known as Ditropan tablets.

Oxybutynin immediate-release oral tablet is only available in generic form. The extended-release oral tablet is available in both generic and brand-name formulations. The brand name is Ditropan XL. In addition to the tablets, oxybutynin is available as an oral syrup.

Don't suddenly stop taking oxybutynin without first consulting with your doctor. Stopping anticholinergic medicines, such as oxybutynin, may cause rebound symptoms such as nausea, sweating, and an urge to urinate more frequently. If you wish to discontinue taking oxybutynin, your provider can help you do so safely.

Talk to your doctor if you are already pregnant or if you have any plans to become pregnant. They will know or recommend what is best for you.

Oxybutynin is occasionally used during pregnancy to treat severe bladder symptoms that cannot be treated otherwise.

Talk to your doctor if you are already breastfeeding or if you have any plans to breastfeed. They will know or recommend what is best for you.

It is acceptable to take Oxybutynin if you are breastfeeding but see your doctor first. It's unclear how much Oxybutynin ends up in breast milk, but it's most likely very little. Your infant will not be able to absorb much from breast milk, and there should be no adverse effects.
