The active ingredient in this medication is phenazopyridine hydrochloride. It is an analgesic dye (an azo dye) that works by soothing the lining of the urinary tract. When the mucosa becomes irritated—whether from a UTI, catheter use, or other urinary discomfort—phenazopyridine provides local pain relief.

However, the following is a synopsis of the general guidelines for the use of phenazopyridine HCl:

• Take phenazopyridine exactly as directed, usually three times daily after meals.
• Swallow tablets with a full glass of water, either with or directly following food, to help reduce stomach upset.
• Take phenazopyridine only for short periods—typically no longer than 2 days—unless your healthcare provider instructs otherwise.
• Phenazopyridine may turn urine a red or orange color; this is normal and expected.
• The red color may stain clothing or contact lenses.
• Do not use phenazopyridine if you have severe kidney disease unless your healthcare provider approves it.
• If you miss a dose, take the next dose at your usual time. Do not double doses.
• Continue using antibiotics if you are being treated for a UTI, as phenazopyridine does not cure the infection.
• Talk to a healthcare professional if symptoms worsen or do not improve after 2 days.

Some mild or common side effects of phenazopyridine hydrochloride include:

• Headache.
• Skin rash.
• Upset stomach or mild nausea.
• Dizziness.

Some individuals may experience serious side effects while using Phenazopyridine Hydrochloride. These side effects may require immediate medical attention. If you experience any of the following, contact your healthcare provider or seek emergency medical help:

You have severe kidney disease.

You have known hypersensitivity to phenazopyridine or any ingredients in the product.

You have a history of allergic reactions to azo dyes.

Many people feel relief from urinary burning and discomfort within the first few hours after a dose. It should be used only for short-term symptom control while the underlying cause—such as a urinary tract infection—is being treated.

When phenazopyridine hydrochloride is taken with other prescription drugs, over-the-counter medications, vitamins, and supplements, it may change how they work or increase the frequency or severity of side effects.
