Rhopressa

The active ingredient in Rhopressa is netarsudil dimesylate. Rhopressa (netarsudil) is a ROCK inhibitor (rho-kinase inhibitor), which means it inhibits a protein in the eye known as rho kinase, with the most common side effect being conjunctival hyperemia. The mechanism of action is that the blocking of this protein aids in the drainage of fluid from the eye (aqueous humor), resulting in lower IOP (eye pressure).

However, the following is a synopsis of the general guidelines for the use of Rhopressa:

• This medication should not be used while wearing soft contact lenses. A preservative (benzalkonium chloride) in the drug may cause the lenses to discolour. Apply the medication at least 15 minutes before placing your contact lenses.
• To apply the ophthalmic solution:
• Tilt your head back slightly and lower your eyelid. Hold the outflow above your eye, tip down, and squeeze out a drop.
• Close your eyes for 2-3 minutes with your head tipped down, without blinking or squinting. Gently press your finger to the inside corner of your eye for about a minute.
• Avoid touching the tip of the eye dropper or placing it directly on your eye.

The most common side effects of Rhopressa seen in clinical trials include:

• Instillation site erythema (eye redness).
• Conjunctival hemorrhage (redness on the white of your eye).
• Eye pain.
• Blurred vision.
• Red eyelids.
• Corneal verticillata (corneal deposits).
• Watery eyes.

Some individuals may experience serious side effects while using Rhopressa. These side effects may require immediate medical attention. If you experience any of the following, contact your healthcare provider or seek emergency medical help:

• Allergic reactions include skin rashes, itching, hives, and swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or neck.
• Severe vision changes or loss.

There are no contraindications with Rhopressa.

According to research, Rhopressa has the strongest effect on lowering ocular pressure 8 hours after taking a dose and lasts for 24 hours. Other studies have found that persons receiving Rhopressa saw a significant drop in ocular pressure within 15 days of commencing the daily drug.

When Rhopressa is taken with other prescription drugs, over-the-counter medications, vitamins, and supplements, it may change how they work or increase the frequency or severity of side effects. There are no known interactions with Rhopressa, but you should make sure that you tell your healthcare professional about anything before starting this medication.

The dosage form and strength of Rhopressa is a 0.02% netarsudil ophthalmic solution. The typical dosage is one drop in the affected eye(s) once per day, in the evening.

For a missed dose, skip it and take your next dose at the normal time. Do not use two dosages at the same time.

As long as the medication is effective, your doctor will probably want you to continue taking it every day.
