What is Taltz?
What is Taltz?
The brand name Taltz (ixekizumab) is an interleukin-17a antagonist. It is used to treat inflammatory conditions such as non-radiographic axial spondyloarthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, active psoriatic arthritis, active ankylosing spondylitis, active non-radiographic axial spondyloarthritis, and moderate-to-severe plaque psoriasis in adult patients. Taltz is a helpful treatment option if you have active PsA and can’t take a tumor necrosis factor (TNF) inhibitor, such as Humira (adalimumab). Taltz may be given alone or in along with a disease-modifying antirheumatic drug (DMARD) such as methotrexate.
Taltz (ixekizumab) is available as a prefilled syringe and an autoinjector. It is administered as an intradermal injection once a month. Injection-site reactions (pain, redness) and upper respiratory infections are examples of side effects.

Important information about Taltz
The active ingredient in Taltz is ixekizumab. It is a biologic medication or monoclonal antibody that functions as an interleukin antagonist. The drug reduces inflammation by binding to IL-17a and preventing the proteins from working.
Follow all directions given to you by your doctor and read all documents provided, including the full Prescribing Information, FDA-Approved Product Labeling, Instructions for Use, and Medication Guide before using Taltz. However, the following is a synopsis of the general guidelines for the use of Taltz:
- Taltz is a subcutaneous (under the skin) injection supplied as a prefilled autoinjector or syringe. You might be instructed on how to administer injections at home. If you do not know how to administer the injection, do not give yourself this medication. A caregiver can administer to you.
- Before injecting the medication, take it out of the fridge and let it warm up to room temperature for half an hour on a level surface without taking off the needle cap. If the medication has frozen, do not use it.
- Never attempt to reheat the drug by submerging it in hot water, heating it in a microwave, letting it sit in the sun, or using any other means.
- Before injecting the solution, always inspect it. Verify if the liquid is clear or slightly yellow and that the expiration date has not passed. There shouldn't be any visible particles in the liquid. Syringes and autoinjectors should not be used if they are broken or cracked, if they are frozen or expired, or if the liquid is hazy or includes tiny particles.
- Every syringe or autoinjector should only be used once, and all of the solution should be injected.
- Except for your navel and the 1-inch (2.5 cm) radius surrounding it, you can inject Taltz anywhere on the front of your legs (upper leg) or abdomen (stomach). You can also use the back of your upper arm to administer the medication if you have a caregiver.
- Avoid injecting twice in the same location. Avoid injecting into areas of skin that are hard, red, bruised, or delicate, or where you have stretch marks, scars, or psoriasis.
The most common side effects of Taltz seen in clinical trials include:
- Upper respiratory infections.
- Reaction at the injection site.
- Fungal infection.
- Nausea.
Some individuals may experience serious side effects while using Taltz. These side effects may require immediate medical attention. If you experience any of the following, contact your healthcare provider or seek emergency medical help:
- Signs of an allergic reaction including swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat, hives, skin rash, and difficulty breathing.
- Fever, coughing, shortness of breath, sore throat, diarrhea, weakness, weight loss, chills, night sweats, and scaly, itchy, or burning skin are all signs of an infection.
These are not all of the possible side effects of Taltz. You should always seek medical advice from your healthcare provider for any questions or concerns about your medical condition or treatment. Read all patient information, medication guides, or drug information sheets that come with this medication. You can also report adverse effects to the Food and Drug Administration at www.fda.gov/medwatch or 1-800-FDA-1088.
Before starting Taltz, it is crucial to discuss any existing health conditions with your healthcare provider. You should be sure that your healthcare provider is aware of all your medical conditions, including whether you have:
- Any active or recent serious infections.
- Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), like Crohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis.
- Tuberculosis (or you know of someone who has it).
- If you have recently received or are going to receive any live vaccine or immunizations.
- A weakened immune system or are taking immunosuppressants.
Your doctor probably won't prescribe Taltz if you have experienced an allergic reaction to any of its constituents. This is due to the possibility of a further allergic response after taking the medication.
Which medical condition you are taking Taltz (ixekizumab) for will determine this. Some people may experience symptom relief as soon as a week or 2, while it may take several months for others. Remember that each person reacts differently to Taltz (ixekizumab). To find out how effectively the drug is treating your problem, be sure to follow up with your provider.
When Taltz is taken with other prescription drugs, over-the-counter medications, vitamins, and supplements, it may change how they work or increase the frequency or severity of side effects. Make sure that you tell your healthcare professional about anything that you are taking to avoid any negative drug interactions, including:
- Carbamazepine (Carbatrol, Epitol, Equetro, Tegretol, Teril)
- Cyclosporine (Gengraf, Neoral, Sandimmune)
- Quinidine (in Nuedexta)
- Sirolimus (Rapamune)
- Tacrolimus (Astagraf, Envarsus, Prograf)
- Warfarin (Coumadin, Jantoven)
- Methotrexate.
