Tazorac Gel

(Tazarotene)

Tazroac (tazarotene gel) is a prescription retinoid used in the treatment of plaque psoriasis and acne vulgaris (or acne). As vitamin A-based medications, retinoids help improve skin appearance and texture for various skin conditions over time. They mainly work by promoting the renewal of skin cells and reducing inflammation. The same active ingredient is also available under other brand names, such as Arazlo, which is available as a lotion formulation.

Important information about Tazorac Gel

How does Tazorac Gel work?

The active ingredient in Tazorac Gel is tazarotene. Tazarotene is a skincare product that belongs to a class known as retinoids. When absorbed into the skin, it is converted to its active form. This active form can help improve the plaques seen in psoriasis by reducing inflammation and keeping skin cell growth under control. For acne, improvements are due to its ability to unclog pores and promote skin cell renewal. For both skin conditions, regular use over several weeks can improve skin texture and appearance.

The safety and efficacy of Tazorac Gel in pediatric patients are unknown. For this reason, Tazorac is only for use in those 12 years of age and up.

How do you use Tazorac Gel?

Follow all directions given to you by your doctor and read all documents provided, including the full Prescribing Information, FDA-Approved Product Labeling, Instructions for Use, and Medication Guide, before using Tazorac. However, the following is a synopsis of the general guidelines for the use of Tazorac:

  • Tazorac Gel should be used exactly as prescribed. It is for external use only. Avoid using near the eyes or the mouth.
  • It is typically applied as a thin layer to the affected area once a day after cleansing the area with a gentle, unscented cleanser. Let the skin dry before using. Only apply to skin with lesions and avoid unaffected areas. Because Tazorac can increase your sensitivity to the sun and risk of sunburn, it should be applied in the evening. During the daytime, opt for protective clothing like long sleeves and a hat, and use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30 on a daily basis. Along with the sun, tazarotene can also increase your sensitivity to light from sunlamps and tanning beds, for which caution should be exercised.
  • Like any topical retinoid, skin irritation and dryness are common. Using a gentle, unscented moisturizer following application can help minimize irritation and keep the skin hydrated. With time, this irritation should improve. However, if it starts to worsen or does not improve with use, you should follow up with your prescriber.
  • If you miss an application, use it as soon as you remember in the evening. However, if it is almost time for your next use, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one.

What are the side effects of Tazorac Gel?

The most common side effects of Tazorac include:

  • General skin irritation, including increased itching and redness, or a burning or stinging sensation
  • Skin peeling
  • Dry skin

Some individuals may experience serious side effects while using Tazorac. These side effects may require immediate medical attention. If you experience any of the following, contact your healthcare provider or seek emergency medical help:

  • Signs of severe irritation or an allergic reaction, such as hives, blistering of the skin, skin discoloration, or any other skin irritation that either worsens or does not improve with continued use

These are not all of the possible side effects of Tazorac. You should always seek medical advice from your healthcare provider for any questions or concerns about your medical condition or treatment. Read all patient information, medication guides, or drug information sheets that come with this medication. You can also report adverse effects to the Food and Drug Administration at www.fda.gov/medwatch or 1-800-FDA-1088.
