The active ingredient in Citrucel is methylcellulose. Methylcellulose is a type of soluble fiber that makes stool softer, and it’s also known as a bulk-forming fiber laxative. It works by pulling water from your intestines into the stool so the stool is easier to pass, thus increasing bowel movements. Through this mechanism, Citrucel results in constipation relief.

• Always take Citrucel with a full glass of water. If you don’t drink enough fluids, there is a risk of choking. For additional information, please see the warnings below.
• For Citrucel caplets:
• The recommended dose for adults and children 12 years old and over is 2 caplets by mouth. Then, you can increase as needed up to 6 times per day. Do not take more than 12 caplets per day.
• The recommended dose for children 6-11 years old is 1 caplet, then increasing as needed up to 6 times per day. Do not take more than 6 caplets per day.
• For children under 6 years of age, consult your healthcare professional.
• For Citrucel Orange (Citrucel powder orange flavor):
• The recommended dose for adults and children 12 years old and over is 1 heaping tablespoon mixed in a full glass of cold water, increasing as needed 1 heaping tablespoon at a time, up to 3 times per day.
• The recommended dose for children 6-11 years old is 2.5 level teaspoons mixed in a full glass of cold water, then increasing as needed 2.5 level teaspoons at a time, up to 3 times per day.
• For children under 6 years of age, consult your healthcare professional.
• If constipation symptoms last longer than 7 days or rectal bleeding occurs at any time, contact your healthcare provider.
• Citrucel products are gluten-free.
• Citrucel Sugar Free contains phenylalanine. Do not use this medication if you have phenylketonuria.

The most common side effects of Citrucel seen in clinical trials as compared to placebo include:

• Bloating or excess gas.
• Abdominal pain.
• Cramping.

Some individuals may experience serious side effects while using Citrucel. These side effects may require immediate medical attention. If you experience any of the following, contact your healthcare provider or seek emergency medical help:

Boxed Warning

• There is a risk of choking if you take Citrucel without enough fluids. It may swell up and block your throat. Do not take Citrucel if you have difficulty swallowing. If you experience chest pain, vomiting, or difficulty swallowing or breathing after taking Citrucel, seek immediate medical attention.

• Difficulty swallowing.
• Allergy to Citrucel or any ingredients in the formulation.

Citrucel, when used appropriately, should generally produce a bowel movement in 12-72 hours.

When Citrucel is taken with other prescription drugs, over-the-counter medications, vitamins, and supplements, it may change how they work or increase the frequency or severity of side effects. Make sure that you tell your healthcare professional about anything that you are taking to avoid any negative drug interactions, including:

• Other laxatives like Metamucil (psyllium).
• Lactulose.
• Pyridostigmine.
