DDAVP Melt

(Desmopressin Acetate)

The active ingredient in DDAVP Melt is desmopressin, a synthetic analogue of the natural antidiuretic hormone vasopressin. Desmopressin works by increasing water reabsorption in the kidneys, which reduces the amount of urine produced. This antidiuretic effect helps control excessive urination and thirst in diabetes insipidus and reduces nighttime urine production in patients with nocturnal enuresis. Desmopressin also increases certain clotting factors, which is why it may be used in specific bleeding disorders.

Follow all directions given to you by your doctor and read all documents provided, including the full Prescribing Information, FDA-Approved Product Labelling, Instructions for Use, and Medication Guide before using DDAVP melt. However, the following is a synopsis of the general guidelines for the use of DDAVP melt:

Tear off the end tab of the blister strip along the perforations, starting at the corner marked with the hand symbol.

Separate one blister from the strip by tearing along the perforations.

Peel back the foil from the blister, starting at the corner with the printed arrow, and remove the foil in the direction of the arrow.

Carefully remove the desmopressin tablet from the blister.

Place the DDAVP Melt under the tongue and allow it to dissolve completely, without chewing or swallowing.

Fluid intake must be limited from one hour before taking DDAVP Melt and until at least eight hours after the dose to reduce the risk of water retention and low sodium levels.

Dosing depends on the condition being treated, patient age, and response to therapy.

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as possible. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not double doses.

This medication should not be used if you have a fever, are vomiting, have diarrhea, or are severely dehydrated.

Regular monitoring of serum sodium levels may be required, especially during initiation or dose adjustments.

Some mild or common side effects of DDAVP melt seen in clinical trials as compared to placebo include:

Headache.

Nausea.

Abdominal pain.

Facial flushing.

Mild weight gain due to fluid retention.

Some individuals may experience serious side effects while using DDAVP melt. These side effects may require immediate medical attention. If you experience any of the following, contact your healthcare provider or seek emergency medical help:

Symptoms of hyponatremia (overdose) such as headache, confusion, nausea, vomiting, fatigue, or seizures.

Water intoxication may present with rapid weight gain, swelling, or decreased urine output.

Allergic reactions such as rash, hives, swelling of the face or throat, or difficulty breathing.

Before starting DDAVP melt, it is crucial to discuss any existing health conditions with your healthcare provider. You should be sure that your healthcare provider is aware of all your medical conditions, including:

Conditions associated with fluid or electrolyte imbalance, such as vomiting, diarrhea, or severe dehydration.

Bleeding problems.

Low sodium levels or a history of hyponatremia.

Heart failure, liver or kidney disease, or high blood pressure.

Cystic fibrosis or conditions associated with increased fluid intake.

Polydipsia or syndrome of inappropriate antidiuretic hormone secretion (SIADH).

Diarrhea or vomiting.

Constant thirst.

Hyponatremia or a history of low sodium levels.

Bleeding problems such as Type II B or platelet-type (pseudo) Von Willebrand’s disease.

Any heart, liver, or kidney problems.

Eating disorders such as bulimia or anorexia.

Adrenal problems such as Addison’s disease.

Conditions associated with water retention.

Known hypersensitivity or allergy to desmopressin or any component of the formulation.

DDAVP Melt begins working within hours after administration. The duration of action varies depending on the dose and individual response, but the antidiuretic effect typically lasts long enough to cover nighttime symptoms when used for nocturnal enuresis.

When DDAVP melt is taken with other prescription drugs, over-the-counter medications, vitamins, and supplements, it may change how they work or increase the frequency or severity of side effects. Make sure that you tell your healthcare professional about anything that you are taking to avoid any negative drug interactions, including:

Medications which increase the risk of hyponatremia or water intoxication: tricyclic antidepressants, selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), carbamazepine, chlorpropamide, chlorpromazine, clofibrate, diuretics, loperamide, and Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs).

Medications which may reduce the effectiveness of DDAVP melt: demeclocycline, norepinephrine, and lithium.

Desmopressin sublingual tablets are available in doses of 60 mcg, 120 mcg, or 240 mcg.

Store DDAVP Melt at room temperature, protected from moisture, and out of the reach of children and pets.

DDAVP Melt is manufactured by Ferring Pharmaceuticals.

There is no generic version of the melt formulation available, but other dosage forms are available in generic forms.

Do not stop taking DDAVP Melt without consulting your healthcare provider. Sudden discontinuation may result in a return of symptoms.

DDAVP Melt should be used during pregnancy only if clearly needed. Discuss potential risks and benefits with your healthcare provider.
