Important information about Emgality
The active ingredient in Emgality is galcanezumab. Unlike other treatments, Emgality specifically targets a protein called calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) that your nerves release when you are having a cluster headache or migraine. CGRP causes the blood vessels in your brain to swell, which can be the cause of pain in your head. By blocking this protein, Emgality helps reduce the frequency and severity of migraine headaches.
Follow all directions given by your doctor and read all documents provided, including the full prescribing information, FDA-approved product labeling, Instructions for Use, and Medication Guide before using Emgality. However, the following is a synopsis of the general guidelines for the use of Emgality:
- Make sure that you are taking the correct dose of Emgality.
- Check the specific mg dose on your injection pen or syringe before injecting.
- Your first dose (also known as your loading dose) will be given to you by a healthcare professional. Do not inject Emgality by yourself or with a caregiver without first getting directions from your healthcare professional on how to do it properly.
- Emgality is injected subcutaneously (under the skin), and often given in the back of the upper arm, abdomen, thigh, or buttocks.
- Once you have been approved for injection at home, or you have been approved as a caregiver, take Emgality out of the fridge, and keep it at room temperature for 30 minutes before injecting it.
- Do not use a microwave, hair dryer, or hot water to warm up the medication.
- Do not shake the medication.
- Take a look at the consistency of the medication before injecting. It should be slightly yellow, slightly brown, or colorless. If the color is different from this, you see specks floating in it, or it looks cloudy, do not take the medication.
- You will typically take a subcutaneous injection of Emgality as a 100mg monthly dose following a 240mg loading dose for the preventative treatment of migraines. Remember the possible and recommended injection locations, and speak to your healthcare professional if you have any questions about where or how you should inject the medication.
- The dosing schedule for the treatment of cluster headache episodes is usually prescribed as 3 injections (300 mg) at the start of the cluster period, followed by 1 injection (100 mg) once per month until the end of the cluster period.
- If a dose of Emgality is missed, give it as soon as possible. Then, Emgality can be scheduled monthly from the date of the last dose. If you have any questions about your dosing schedule, speak to your healthcare professional.
The most common side effects of Emgality seen in clinical trials as compared to placebo include:
- Injection site reactions, including:
- Warmth
- Itching
- Pain
- Back pain
- Sore throat
- Dizziness
- Weight gain
- Constipation
- Muscle and joint pain
- Nausea
Some individuals may experience serious side effects while using Emgality. These side effects may require immediate medical attention. If you experience any of the following, contact your healthcare provider or seek emergency medical assistance:
- Serious allergic reaction. Symptoms could include:
- Swelling of your lips, face, throat, or tongue
- Trouble breathing
- Hives
These are not all of the possible side effects of Emgality. You should always seek medical advice from your healthcare provider for any questions or concerns about your medical condition or treatment. Read all patient information, medication guides, or drug information sheets that come with this medication. You can also report adverse effects to the Food and Drug Administration at www.fda.gov/medwatch or 1-800-FDA-1088.
Before starting Emgality, it is crucial to discuss any existing health conditions with your healthcare provider. You should be sure that your healthcare provider is aware of all your medical conditions, including if you have:
A known hypersensitivity reaction to galcanezumab or any of the inactive ingredients in Emgality.
Emgality is contraindicated in people with a severe hypersensitivity to galcanezumab-gnlm or any of the excipients.
Emgality (galcanezumab) can begin reducing the number of migraine days as early as the first month of treatment, though full benefits may take a few months. Clinical trials have shown noticeable improvement typically within 1 to 3 months of consistent use.
When Emgality is taken with other prescription drugs, over-the-counter medications, vitamins, and supplements, it may change how they work or increase the frequency or severity of side effects. Make sure that you tell your healthcare professional about anything that you are taking. Currently, there are not any major interactions listed for Emgality.
Emgality comes as an injection in the following strengths:
- Single-dose prefilled pen of 120mg/mL solution
- Single-dose prefilled syringe of 120mg/mL solution
- Single-dose prefilled syringe of 100 mg/mL
Often, the 120 mg/mL prefilled syringes and pens are used to prevent migraines, whereas the 100 mg/mL prefilled syringes are prescribed for the treatment of episodic cluster headaches.
Your doctor will prescribe a different dosage for you if you are using it for the prevention of migraine (prophylaxis of migraines) or episodic migraines.
Emgality should be stored in its original carton in the refrigerator (between 36°F to 46°F or 2°C to 8°C). Do not freeze, shake, or put in direct sunlight. Once you take Emgality out of the refrigerator, do not put it back. If you have taken it out of the refrigerator, it can be stored at temperatures up to 86°F (30°C) for up to 7 days.
Emgality (galcanezumab) is manufactured by Eli Lilly and Company, a global pharmaceutical company.
Currently, there is no lower-cost generic available.
To stop using Emgality, it's important to consult with your healthcare provider for a safe discontinuation plan. Stopping abruptly may cause a return of your symptoms.
