Important information about Estrace Vaginal Cream
The active ingredient in Estrace vaginal cream is estradiol, a form of estrogen. In postmenopausal women, hormone therapy helps supplement the lack of estrogen to relieve menopausal symptoms such as vaginal dryness.
Follow all directions given to you by your doctor and read all documents provided, including the full Prescribing Information, FDA-Approved Product Labeling, Instructions for Use, and Medication Guide before using Estrace vaginal cream. However, the following is a synopsis of the general guidelines for the use of Estrace vaginal cream:
1. Remove the cap, and screw the threaded end of the applicator onto the tube until secure.
2. While holding it upright, gently squeeze the tube from the bottom. As you squeeze, the plunger will show the number of grams being expelled.
3. Unscrew the applicator and replace the cap on the tube.
4. Lie on your back with your knees drawn up.
5. Gently insert the applicator into the vagina and press the plunger down.
6. After removing, clean the applicator by pulling the plunger to remove it from the barrel, then washing it with soap and warm water.
7. You may need to stop taking estradiol for 4-6 weeks before surgery or if you’re on bed rest.
8. If you have a uterus, you may also need a progestin to lower your risk of uterine cancer.
9. Do not drink grapefruit juice while taking this medication.
10. Have a breast exam and mammogram yearly, as this medication may increase your risk of breast cancer.
Some mild or common side effects of Estrace vaginal cream seen in clinical trials as compared to placebo include:
- Headache.
- Breast pain.
- Vaginal burning, irritation, and itching at the application site.
- Stomach pain.
- Hair loss.
Estradiol can put you at an increased risk of serious side effects. These side effects may require immediate medical attention. If you experience any of the following, contact your healthcare provider or seek emergency medical help:
- Severe allergic reaction presenting with swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat, hives, and trouble breathing.
- Signs of a heart attack include chest pain, shortness of breath, and pain radiating to your shoulder, neck, or jaw.
