Finacea Gel

(Azelaic Acid)

The active ingredient in Finacea topical gel is azelaic acid. It inhibits the expression of substances that contribute to inflammation in the skin to ease the inflammatory symptoms of rosacea. Azelaic acid is also antibacterial and reduces keratinization of the skin, which helps in reducing red bumps and pimples.

Follow all directions given to you by your doctor and read all documents provided, including the full Prescribing Information, FDA-Approved Product Labeling, Instructions for Use, and Medication Guide before using Finacea. However, the following is a synopsis of the general guidelines for the use of Finacea:

-Finacea gel is for topical use only.

-Before using Finacea gel, wash the affected area with a mild soap or cleanser and let it dry fully.

-Apply a thin layer (0.5 grams or 2.5cm of gel) to the affected area twice daily.

-Gently rub into the skin.

-Wash your hands after every application.

In the case of skin irritation, you may temporarily reduce the frequency of using Finacea gel. Consult your doctor if the irritation persists.

It is important to maintain good skincare while using Finacea gel. Avoiding triggers of rosacea, such as spicy foods, alcohol, and unprotected sun exposure.

Avoid the use of alcoholic cleansers, abrasive skin products, peeling agents, astringents, or tinctures, as these may worsen skin irritation from Finacea gel.

The most common side effects of Finacea seen in clinical trials include:

-Skin irritation

-Skin dryness

-Burning, itching, or erythema (reddening) of the application site

Some individuals may experience serious side effects while using Finacea. These side effects may require immediate medical attention. If you experience any of the following, contact your healthcare provider or seek emergency medical help:

-Signs of an allergic reaction: hives or swelling of the face, lips, or tongue

Finacea contains inactive ingredients that can be harmful to the eyes, mouth, and mucous membranes. If Finacea gel comes into contact with these areas, they should be washed with large amounts of water. Consult a doctor if irritation, including eye irritation, persists.

Before starting Finacea, it is crucial to discuss any existing health conditions with your healthcare provider. You should be sure that your healthcare provider is aware of all your medical conditions, including:

-Acne, eczema, or other inflammatory skin conditions

-Vitiligo: Azelaic acid may cause hypopigmentation. Report changes in skin color to your doctor

-Asthma

-Cold sores

Finacea gel is contraindicated in people who have had allergic reactions to azelaic acid or other inactive ingredients of the formulation, including benzoic acid, propylene glycol, sodium hydroxide, disodium edetate, lecithin, polyacrylic acid, and polysorbate 80.

It may take 4-8 weeks of treatment to observe the full effects of Finacea gel.

Drug interactions between Finacea and other prescription drugs or over-the-counter medications, vitamins, and supplements have not been studied. Make sure that you tell your healthcare professional about anything that you are taking to avoid any negative drug interactions, especially other products you use on your skin.

Finacea contains 15% azelaic acid.

Finacea gel can be stored at room temperature (between 15 and 30 degrees Celsius).

There are no generic versions of brand-name Finacea gel at this time.

The duration of treatment with Finacea gel will vary based on the severity of the rosacea. Finacea gel is typically used long-term, but follow your doctor’s instructions on how to use Finacea gel.

The use of Finacea gel in pregnancy has not been studied. Talk to your doctor if you are already pregnant or if you have any plans to become pregnant. They will know or recommend what is best for you.

Although absorption of Finacea gel systemically is not significant, azelaic acid may be excreted into breast milk. Talk to your doctor if you are already breastfeeding or if you have any plans to breastfeed. They will know or recommend what is best for you.
