Important information about Intuniv
The active ingredient in Intuniv is guanfacine hydrochloride. It belongs to a class of medications known as alpha2A-adrenergic receptor agonists. Its mechanism of action is not fully known for the treatment of ADHD.
However, it is thought that it improves focus and behavior by decreasing the amount of norepinephrine in the brain.
Follow all directions given to you by your doctor and read all documents provided, including the full Prescribing Information, FDA-Approved Product Labeling, Instructions for Use, and Medication Guide before using Intuniv. However, the following is a synopsis of the general guidelines for the use of Intuniv:
- Take this medication orally exactly as directed by your healthcare provider.
- Starting dose: 1 mg orally once daily, either in the morning or evening.
- Do not crush, chew, or break guanfacine extended-release tablets (Intuniv) before swallowing.
- If you miss a dose of Intuniv, take the medication as soon as you can, but skip the missed dose if it is almost time for your next dose.
- Avoid drinking alcohol since it can increase certain side effects of this medication. Also, avoid consuming Intuniv with a high-fat meal since it can increase certain side effects, such as sleepiness.
Some mild or common side effects of Intuniv include:
- Sleepiness/drowsiness.
- Weight gain.
- Tiredness.
- Headache.
- Stomach pain.
- Low blood pressure (hypotension).
- Slow heart rate (bradycardia).
- Trouble sleeping.
- Nausea.
- Low appetite.
- Feeling irritable.
- Dry mouth.
- Constipation.
Some individuals may experience serious side effects while using Intuniv. These side effects may require immediate medical attention. If you experience any of the following, contact your healthcare provider or seek emergency medical help:
- Severe allergic reaction - hives, itching, skin rash, swelling, trouble breathing.
- Irregular heart rhythm - lightheadedness, irregular heartbeat.
- Heart rate changes - slower heartbeat (bradycardia), chest pain.
- Low blood pressure upon standing (orthostatic hypotension).
These are not all of the possible side effects of Intuniv. You should always seek medical advice from your healthcare provider for any questions or concerns about your medical condition or treatment. Read all patient information, medication guides, or drug information sheets that come with this medication. You can also report adverse effects to the Food and Drug Administration at www.fda.gov/medwatch or 1-800-FDA-1088.
Before starting Intuniv, it is crucial to discuss any existing health conditions with your healthcare provider. You should be sure that your healthcare provider is aware of all your medical conditions, including if you have:
- Blood pressure problems.
- Heart problems (heart rhythm, heart attack).
- Vascular disease.
- Stroke.
- Liver problems.
- Kidney problems.
Previous hypersensitivity/allergic reaction to Intuniv or any of its ingredients.
ADHD symptoms can take a few weeks to get better. You'll start the medication at a low dose of the medication before your prescriber increases it each week to a maintenance dose. This helps lower the chance of side effects like feeling too sleepy. Keep taking Intuniv every day, even if you don't see any improvements right away.
When Intuniv is taken with other prescription drugs, over-the-counter medications, vitamins, and supplements, it may change how they work or increase the frequency or severity of side effects. Make sure that you tell your healthcare professional about anything that you are taking to avoid any negative drug interactions, including:
- Ketoconazole.
- Barbiturates.
- Blood pressure medications.
- Medications for mental health conditions.
- Sedatives.
Intuniv comes in the following dosage forms and strengths:
- Extended-release tablets - 1 mg, 2 mg, 3 mg, 4 mg.
Store this medication at room temperature and keep it out of reach of children.
Takeda Pharmaceuticals is the pharmaceutical company that manufactures Intuniv.
There are lower-cost generics available of the brand-name Intuniv.
Do not stop or adjust your use of this medication without first consulting with your healthcare provider. Stopping this medication abruptly can cause serious side effects to occur; therefore, the dose of guanfacine needs to be tapered down.
It is unknown if or how Intuniv could affect pregnancy or harm an unborn baby. Talk to your doctor if you are already pregnant or if you have any plans to become pregnant. They will know or recommend what is best for you.
It is unknown if Intuniv passes into breast milk. Talk to your doctor if you are already breastfeeding or if you have any plans to breastfeed. They will know or recommend what is best for you.
